Ripon High’s second-round trip will be much shorter than the one it took Tuesday night.

The Indians traveled nearly 65 miles to upset fifth-seeded Summerville 28-26, 25-18, 25-21 in Tuolumne, setting up a quarterfinal with No. 4 Ripon Christian in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV volleyball playoffs.

“I am so proud of my girls,” said Adrienne Uecker, who will make her second appearance in the second round as Ripon’s second-year head coach. “They played very well tonight. We came out strong and were consistent throughout the match. Every player was a leader tonight. They all came together and it was about team tonight.”

Ripon (16-11), checking in as the 12th seed, made it tough for Mother Lode League titlist Summerville (16-5) to defend thanks to a balanced attack. Setter Lizzy Nizzoli put up 28 assists while leading the team with 11 kills. She also had nine digs.

Paige Goodger was also a force at the net, come up with 10 kills, three blocks and 10 kills. Emily Brutout added seven kills and 10 digs. Kristen Carhart turned in six kills and four blocks.

Chelsea Ioppini recorded three aces and went on a big service run in the third set to give the Indians some breathing room.

The Ripon-Ripon Christian crosstown duel begins at 7 p.m. Thursday. Their last three matches were part of the SJS’ Foundation Games program, which do not count against records. Ripon Christian swept their last two meetings
