Ripon High collects first boys hoop win of season

Ripon High posted its first win of the season Tuesday, edging out visiting Patterson in a non-league matchup, 50-47.

Logan Gillespie hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to help secure the lead for the Indians (1-6).

Prior to that, the Tigers (5-3) pulled to within a point late in the game on a trey.

Atwater 82, Lathrop 69

The Spartans were overmatched by the Colton Dukes-led Falcons (5-2).

Dukes poured in 29 points, scoring 19 of those in the first half.

Lathrop (2-3) received double-digit scoring from Izaias White (16), Quentin Bohoma (15), Samuel Stewart (11) and Kameron Jones (11).

Manteca 72, Escalon 29

Freshman Ariel De La O netted a game-high 21 to lead the Buffaloes (3-0) over the visiting Cougars (7-2-1).

Marcelina Chaparro enjoyed her first game back by scoring 10 points and dishing out nine assists. “With her on the floor just opens up opportunities for everybody on the floor,” said Manteca coach Oscar Calix.

His Buffaloes will take on Liberty Ranch in Thursday’s opener of the Monterey Trail Tournament.

Lathrop 43, Chavez 33

The Spartans (8-3) went small in the fourth quarter, employing a guard-laden lineup to outscore the host Titans (2-6) during that span, 18-6.

Down 27-25 after three, Tatianna Lowery nailed a 3 from the top of the key to ignite the rally, according to coach Dwayne Davis.

He was without four of his starters, who were out with illnesses.

Lowery led Lathrop with eight points. Egypt Jenkins and sophomore center Navi Kaur both finished with nine.

Two-way sports star Isa Paniagua -- she also plays soccer for the Spartans -- was back on the hardwood, playing tough defense while hauling in 13 rebounds.

Lathrop 58, Chavez 10

The Spartans put together an overwhelming performance at Chavez.

Riana Dela Cruz led the way with a game-high 16 points. Kalani Soriano and Samreet Dhot both chipped in with 12 points.

“This was a total team effort on both offense and defense,” said Spartan coach Sammy Campero.

Girls soccer

Weston Ranch 3, Edison 0

Goals from Sergio Garcia, Angel Zapata and Zinedine Valdez lifted the Cougars past Edison.

Garcia and Josemaria Barrera were also credited with assists. For Barrera, this was his fifth assist in three games.

Garcia and Ivan Guerra also led the defense by "controlling the mids," according to WR coach Francisco Cisneros.

"Our defense continues to do a great job," he said, giving added recognition to Eleazar Nava, Mauricio Morales, Cesar Juarez and Jaime Arreola.

Goalie Marcos Arriaza finished with two saves.
