Idrees ElFarra scored a season-high 21 points on Tuesday, catapulting River Islands to a 70-61 double overtime victory over visiting Ripon Christian in non-league boys basketball action.
The senior guard accounted for eight of his team’s nine points in the second OT.
“Credit to RC; they’re tough and have some really good players,” River Islands coach Justin Graham said. “Our guys really stepped up big when we needed it.”
It was the second consecutive game that was decided in an extra period for Ripon Christian (8-9), which raced past Hughson 67-59 last Friday for a Trans-Valley League victory
Darius Radoc Factoran complemented ElFarra with 17 points, while providing tough defense. Charles Mapanao made four 3s en route to his 16 points.
Ripon Christian came up short despite 25 points from Jake Vander Veen. Amos Cady knocked down three of the Knights’ 8 3s and finished with 17 points. Chase Bunnell scored eight of his 15 in the fourth quarter.
Ripon Christian will look to bounce back Thursday when it takes on rival Ripon in Trans Valley League play. The Riptide tip off their Central California Athletic Alliance schedule tonight with Hughes Academy back at River Islands Community Gym.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lathrop 57, Johansen 29
In Modesto, turnovers helped Johansen (0-4, 7-11 overall) stay within range of the Western Athletic Conference-leading Spartans (4-0, 18-0) at the outset.
Lathrop created separation with a 13-3 second quarter for a 23-11 lead, then blew it open with a 16-5 fourth.
Breanna Wiseman amassed 20 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Shakara Porter added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. JaLeiyah Ray racked up 10 points and five rebounds.
Ripon 45, Orestimba 41
In Newman, a 16-8 advantage in the third quarter was the difference for Ripon (1-1 TVL, 8-10 overall).
Anandjap Dhami paced the Indians with 12 points and eight rebounds. Scarlett Ponce pitched in 11 points, while Savannah Richardson and Itxel Reynoso scored nine apiece.
Natalie Corella and Salece Machado led Orestimba (0-2, 5-13) with 10 points each.
BOYS SOCCER
Lathrop 4, Central Valley 1
The Spartans (4-1-1, 12-3-2 overall) exploded for three second-half goals at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres, and the result catapulted them to the top of the WAC standings.
Andres Hurtado-Garcia scored the final two goals, including a penalty kick that was earned by Alan Hernandez. Freshman Julian Silva scored the go-ahead goal. He later assisted Hurtado-Garcia’s headed first goal.
Emiliano Enriquez, also a freshman, scored off a cross from Adrian Montanez early in the game. Goalkeeper Julian Ceja came up with four saves.
Central Valley won the JV game, 1-0.
JV girls basketball
Lathrop 64, Johansen 14
The Spartans held Johansen scoreless in the second and third quarters, opening up a 50-8 lead.
Faith Allen spearheaded them with 19 points, five steals and two rebounds. Brianna Valencia registered 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Zoha Ali chimed in with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Frosh girls basketball
Lathrop 45, Johansen 12
Irshbir Bisla collected 15 rebounds while scoring eight points for the victorious Spartans.
Ryleigh Race paced them with 11 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals. Alexia Garcia added nine points and nine steals. Kayden Davis chipped in eight points and four steals.
