ROUNDUP: Hurtado Garcia strikes twice in Lathrop boys soccer road win

The Lathrop boys soccer team returned to its winning ways Thursday, downing host Grace Davis 3-1 in a Western Athletic Conference game at Mary Grogan Community Park.

Andres Hurtado Garcia scored a brace for the Spartans (1-1 WAC, 9-3-1 overall) and was on the receiving end of passes from freshman Julian Silva. The tandem connected on a late headed corner kick that iced the game.

Standout senior Alan Hernandez opened his account for 2025 with the go-ahead banger early in the second half. Grace Davis (0-2, 1-7) earlier tied It on a set piece.

Lathrop has a long break before its next match, which is scheduled for Jan. 6 at home against Ceres.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Ripon 60, Hughes Academy 54

Gino Calderara made six 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a game-high 22 points in the consolation quarterfinal of the Motherlode Madness Tournament at Argonaut.

AJ Vanderwerff contributed with 13 points, Sam Stewart scored nine off three made 3s and Andrew Shaw pitched in with eight. The Indians (2-6) drilled 11 3s in all.

Hughes Academy was paced by Orire Sodunke’s 14 points and Isaiah Barry’s 13.

Ripon faces Hoopa Valley or Denair tonight at 5.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Merced 45, Sierra 37

The Timberwolves (5-5) could not overcome an 18-2 second quarter in the Livingston Tournament opener.

Isabellah Crabb led them with 16 points, Emalina Latu added eight and Danica Cesante had six.

Sierra faces Mesa Verde tonight at 6.
