East Union’s boys basketball team battled back from a 14-point halftime deficit to knock off Central Catholic on the road 76-75 in overtime Wednesday night.
Dylan Lee buried the tying 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in regulation, making it 68-68. He later pushed the Lancers (2-0 Valley Oak League, 13-6 overall) ahead for good with a free throw, finishing with 27 points.
It is East Union’s second win over the Raiders (1-1, 9-7) since the Modesto-based school joined the VOL in the 2014-15 academic year. Central Catholic took 16-7 and 40-26 leads after the first two quarters.
“Unbelievable effort and energy from my squad,” EU coach Dutch Ell said. “We locked in defensively and rebounded much better in the second half. Credit to CC, they’re an incredibly aggressive rebounding team and shot lights out from the (free-throw) line.
“But I preached that if we give everything we had for the 16 minutes of the second half, we are never out of it.”
Anthony Sy supported Lee’s outburst with 21 points. Alex Cuevas contributed 12 points, and Alex Cervantes had 10.
“I am so proud of the fight my team showed tonight,” Ell said.
His Lancers have another big game Friday when they host cross-town rival Manteca.
