ROUNDUP: Ripon battles back to net 5-set volleyball win over Manteca

Down 2-1 on sets, Ripon’s boys volleyball team squeaked out the final two to edge out visiting Manteca 18-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13 in a non-league match Tuesday.

The victorious Indians (8-4) were paced by Hunter Adams’ eight kills, eight blocks, seven digs and four aces.

Garrett Bright anchored the team in the attack and on defense, contributing 18 assists and 16 digs. Martin Raygoza added seven kills and three blocks. Jasen Ponce had five kills, 13 digs and three aces. Jalen Wilson helped with four kills, four blocks and eight digs.

For the Buffaloes (4-4), Jon Rojas compiled 35 assists and spread the wealth to Micah Crawford (13 kills), Angel Rodriguez (11 kills) and Nick Grabowski (seven kills).

Both teams will face undefeated Ripon Christian the next two nights, with Ripon welcoming its in-town rival today.

 

East Union 3, Venture Academy 0

The Lancers (4-4) had their way with visiting Venture (0-5), 25-6, 25-15, 25-17.

Setter Jyruz Faustorilla led the way with 15 assists and eight aces. Luis Mercado served 21 points, three of which went for aces. Jai Aquino pounded 13 kills, and Nathan Rodriguez contributed eight.

 

Weston Ranch 3, McNair 1

Abraham Palacios (two aces) and Elliot Mobley thumped seven kills apiece in a balanced attack for the host Cougars (4-5), who prevailed, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18.

Elijah Mobley chipped in with five kills, and Marcos Arriaza had five to go with a team-high three blocks. Eleazar Nava set 15 assists and contributed three kills. Sammy Seng had eight assists, and Tommy Duong paced the defense with six digs.

 

BASEBALL

Oakdale 5, East Union 4

The Lancers (0-1, 4-6 overall) were two outs away from escaping Oakdale (3-0, 7-4) with a win in their Valley Oak League opener.

Jacob Toste, who finished 2 for 2, hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to give East Union a 4-3 lead. The Mustangs were able to walk it off in the bottom half, taking advantage of two walks and a dropped foul ball with one out.

It’s the third-straight, one-run loss for EU, which dropped its previous two in extra innings. A.J. Vasquez had a two-run hit, and Evan Jeffery pitched five strong innings in the defeat.

 

Lathrop 8, Pacheco 1

A.J. Duenez twirled a four-hit, complete-game gem, striking out five while supported by a 13-hit attack.

The host Spartans (2-1 Western Athletic Conference, 4-3 overall) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the first.

Jeremy Julien went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Jasper Tover drove in three runs and roped a triple, finishing 3 for 3. Omare Cross added two hits, while Roman Giordano pitched in two RBIs.                  

 

BOYS TENNIS

Weston Ranch 9, East Union 0

It was all Weston Ranch in the VOL home match for the Cougars.

Victor Perez (6-1, 6-2), Frankie Ambriz (6-4, 6-4), Ruben Avalos (6-2, 6-2), Manvir Singh (6-3, 6-0), Junior Alejo (6-4, 6-2) and Ben Moua (6-0, 6-1) swept in singles play. Jonathan Sierra and Yair Trujillo won the lone doubles contest, 6-3, 6-3. East Union forfeited the other doubles matches.

 

Manteca 7, Kimball 2

The Buffaloes dominated the six singles matches at West High in Tracy, improving to 3-0 in the VOL.

Jonas Mueller and Yok Chai Ma won at Nos. 1-2 singles, respectively, 6-0, 6-0. Emiliano Hurtado (6-0, 6-2), Ivan Barajas (6-1, 6-0), Luke Samson (6-4, 6-2) and Kevan Neduvakkattu (6-1, 6-2).

Michael Osanna and Landon Butler took the No. 1 doubles match, 7-5, 6-2. Vincent Almeida and Michael Levchenko fell at No. 2 doubles 2-6, 2-6 to Abem Girmai and Kaleb Pamba. The No. 3 tandem of Gilbert Trouche and Declan Edwards fell short against James Seitz and Kai Yu Li, 6-2, 0-6, 3-10.

 

Ceres 6, Lathrop 3

Kurt Valero was the victor of a 3-hour marathon match at No. 1 singles, outlasting Ceres’ Eduardo Ramirez, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8). The visiting Spartans got their other two team points from forfeited matches at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Ceres was able to was able to pull out two three-set victories. No. 2 Noah Zamora defeated Lathrop’s Alfredo Tolentino 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-4. At No. 1 doubles, Ceres’ Sergio Gonzalez and Fabian Torres dispatched Gurmatt Singh and Elisher Poklay, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

 

BOYS GOLF

Ripon Christian 169, Orestimba 218

Camdan Indelicato finished 2-over-par 30 to win the Southern Athletic League dual match at St. Stanislaus Golf Course in Modesto.

Trey Van Groningen contributed with a 33, while Ethan Schenk and Aiden Silva each carded a 34. Cade Van Groningen rounded out the Knights’ score with a 38. Matthew Flandes registered a 38 to lead Orestimba.

 

JV boys volleyball

Manteca 2, Ripon 1

The visiting Buffaloes battled back from a nine-point deficit in Game 3, surging to a thrilling 25-17, 21-25, 16-14 victory.

Johan Peringelil and Christian Pesqueda spearheaded Manteca with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Fernandez Lopez handed out 10 assists.

Jack Schooland swatted five kills for Ripon, Anthony Gomez had 10 assists and Marquell Marshall tallied eight digs.
