ROUNDUP: Ripon Christian tops Ripon by one stroke in TVL golf tourney

 The Ripon Christian boys golf team ended Ripon’s streak of Trans Valley League Tournament wins on Thursday, edging out the Indians by a single stroke, 373-374, at Teleli Golf Course.

The Knights had four players finish in the red and in the top five.

Hudson Schenk led them with a 5-under 67 that featured seven birdies.

Matthew Ubick ended at 2-under 70 thanks to a double birdie on hole 18. Thomas Graham and Carter Van Groningen finished tied for fourth with 71s. Blake Stuit added a 94.

Ripon had won five straight league tournaments going back to last year and 28 of the last 29 since 2022.

TVL Tournament No. 4 for the season is on March 26 at Pine Mountain Lake Golf Course.


Western Athletic Conference

Lathrop’s Brayden Beckmann was low medalist for the second WAC tournament of the season, finishing 4-under 68 at Creekside Golf Course. His round included seven birdies against three bogeys.

The Spartans came in fourth place as a team with a 505 score. Beyer (463) held off Central Valley (466) and Livingston (467) for the top spot.

Raphael Iniguez contributed a solid 88 for Lathrop. Ryan Cabanting (120), Jasjeet Batthal (108) and Bryce Rebeiro (121) made up the rest of the team score.

The next conference tourney is on Thursday, March 26 at Rancho Del Rey.


BOYS TENNIS

Sierra 9, Central Catholic 0

The Timberwolves (5-2, 6-4 overall) started the second half of their Valley Oak League schedule in dominant fashion.

Harshith Kumar (6-0, 6-2), Ryan Alves (6-1, 6-0), Himmat Dosanjh (6-0, 6-4), Zainn Ali (6-3, 7-6) and Arnav Sah (6-3, 6-2) swept at singles.

Central Catholic forfeited the No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles matches.

Raynak Mahar/Reyansh Bansode (6-4, 6-0) and Ashvin Gill/Johan Arroyo (6-1, 6-0) were the doubles winners.


COED TENNIS

Ripon 9, Millennium 0

Joseph Tharakan won the No. 1 boys singles match against Patrick Bai 7-5, 6-3 in the most competitive match of the day. The visiting Falcons forfeited the No. 2 boys singles match and retired in the middle of the mixed doubles match.

Brookelyn Betschart and Lily Meyer both won in 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in girls singles. Max Ferral and Emilio Machado Perez won at No. 1 boys doubles 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 1 girls tandem of Sophie Douglas and Alyssa Lan swept, 6-0, 6-0.

Ripon’s Nos. 2 boys and girls teams were both comprised of two different pairings, with each playing a set. Jordan Sandoval/John Yeung combined with Nate Denhart/Richard Vander Meulen for a 6-3, 6-3 win. For the girls match, Abby Douglas/Salina Epperson and Molly Berger/Yunishka Dahal prevailed, 6-0, 6-3.


BASEBALL

Mountain House 5, Ripon 4

Host Ripon (7-5) answered every productive inning from the Mustangs (9-5) but couldn’t get over the hump in the non-league contest.

Jack Peters knocked in two runs for the Indians, finishing 2 for 4. Frank Carter-Castro went 2 for 3 with a run, and Fabian Nuno added an RBI triple.

Nuno also pitched five innings, finishing with four strikeouts while giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk.


River Islands 20, Greene Academy 9 (6)

The Riptide (6-5) rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and stretched the early lead to 18-1 at one point.

The Lions (6-3) from Sacramento broke through for eight runs in the fourth to extend the game.

Daryl Carpenter spearheaded the River Islands attack with a 3-for-3 effort that includes a double, a triple, three runs and four RBIs.

Matthew Echivarre (3 for 5, triple, three runs), George Dayeh (1 for 5, double, two runs) and Cash Orndoff (2 for 3, three runs) each drove in three runs. Freshman Chase Salomon contributed a home run, finishing 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. Israel Fuentes was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.
