ROUNDUP: Sierra ends VOL softball skid in dramatic comeback

The Sierra softball team’s Valley Oak League drought ended in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, battling back from an early double-digit deficit and scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to shock Mountain House, 21-19.

The Timberwolves had lost 39 straight league games, and its last VOL win was earned in the 2022 finale against Weston Ranch.

Genyssa Rodriguez spearheaded the comeback charge, going 3 for 6 with a home run, a double and six RBIs.

Mountain House (3-3 VOL, 8-4 overall) broke out for a 12-0 lead and were ahead 15-4 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That’s when Sierra (1-7, 6-7) began its charge, scratching across 10 runs.

They scored three more in the fifth to momentarily take a 17-15 lead. The Mustangs countered with two in the sixth to tie it and two more in the seventh to jump ahead for the final time.

Aliyah Martinez contributed four RBIs, finishing 2 for 4 with a double and a run. Izabella Cervantez went 4 for 4 with four runs, two steals and an RBI.

Adriana Medieros (two runs, two RBIs) and Sky Kane (double, two runs, RBI) both finished 3 for 3.

Winning pitcher Valeria Villanueva went the distance in the circle, while hitting 3 for 5 with a double, three runs and two RBIs.

Sierra hosts Manteca on Thursday.

East Union 6, Patterson 4

A four-run flurry was the difference for the Lancers (2-5 VOL, 10-9 overall), who travel to VOL-leading Central Catholic on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Ripon 13, Hayward 2 (6)

The Indians (10-8) scored five unanswered runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings to even its record to 1-1 in the Fran Oneto/Atwater-Winton Lions Easter Tournament. They close pool play with tourney host Atwater tonight at 7.

Hunter Weber was a two-way contributor for Ripon. He went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs at the plate. The senior also pitched the first two-plus innings. Sophomore Frank Carter-Castro threw the final four, striking out seven against no walks in the combined three-hitter.

Landon Espinola added a 3-for-4 effort on offense with two steals, two runs and an RBI. Brayden McDowell went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI.

River Islands 21, Modesto Christian 1 (5)

The Riptide (10-6) erupted for 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning in the lopsided non-league contest.

River Islands totaled 10 hits, eight walks, three hit batters and benefited from five errors.

Israel Fuentes highlighted the barrage, driving in six runs while plating three in a 3-for-5 explosion that includes a homer. He was also the winning pitcher, striking out seven over four innings in a combined one-hitter. Ahi Bysani finished it off with a perfect fifth-inning appearance.

Cash Orndoff went 2 for 3 with a double, a run and two RBIs.

River Islands hosts Game 2 on Thursday.

Matthew Echivarre, Chase Salomon, Logan Orndoff and Santiago Lopez each scored three times.

Ripon Christian 12, Ceres 4 (5)

Ripon Christian (15-2) rallied for eight unanswered runs for the win, improving to 2-0 in the Windemuth Tournament at John Thurman Field.

The Knights face Denair this morning at 8:45.
