ROUNDUP: Sierra sweeps VOL track meet at Manteca

 Sierra’s boys and girls track and field teams both improved to 2-0 in Valley Oak League dual meets on Thursday after wins at Manteca. The boys prevailed 93-39, while the girls won, 88-47.

Francis Bravo highlighted the Sierra boys with personal-best times in the 100-meter dash (10.96 seconds) and 200 (22.90).

The Timberwolves got much of their points in the distance races, with Christian Gonzalez (800, 1,600) and Alvin Varghese (3,200) leading the charge. Sierra also won the 4x800 relay, which included Malcolm Nguyen, Ishaan Parhar, Ruben Meza Mendez, Olivier Roman.

Sac-Joaquin Section ranked Teagan Nazzisi took first in the shot put and second in the discus with a new personal-best mark. Mantoj Grewal (high), Oluwademilade Akinyele (long) and BJ Cutar (triple, third long) were the T’wolves’ standouts in the jumps.

For Manteca, William Brown won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles and was on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Jayden Harris joined him on the winning relays, while setting a personal record with a first-place time (51.88) in the 400 and finishing as runner-up in the 200.

Sophomore Jamir Mellion won the discus.

Mya Everett led the Sierra girls with wins in all three jump events. She PR’d in the triple at 34 feet even. Anna Dittman took first in the 800 and mile.

Felisa Cruz-Olenhouse (100, 200) and Khamylle Bollengier (400; second, 200) spearheaded Sierra in the sprints and were on the winning 4x100 relay.

Naomi Ross, Mikayla Villalobos, Selmy Robles Salazar and Alyssa Rodriguez won the 4x800 relay.

Manteca’s Kiara Williams set PRs while winning the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Raniya Nelson doubled in the shot put and discus.

Paisley Coenenberg (3,200) and Susan Joseph (pole vault) contributed first-place points for the Buffaloes. Jacey Iganiza, Kayla Louis, Jashneetpal Deol and Jaylah Benton won the mile relay.

Sierra next hosts Patterson on Thursday, April 2, and Manteca competes in the Modesto Junior College Invitational on April 3.


SOFTBALL

Manteca 11, Mountain House 5

A six-run fourth inning was the difference for the host Buffaloes (3-1 VOL, 7-3 overall)

Lauren Moncada highlighted their 10-hit outing with a home run, finishing 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Bella Cooper (double, two steals, run, three RBIs) and Sienna Owen (two steals, two runs) each went 2 for 3. Na’ima Calderon (RBI), Maleiah Garza (RBI), and Aleisa Harris (two runs) each slugged a double.

Winning pitcher Isabel Tonna struck out six batters, while allowing nine hits and a walk.

Mountain House (3-2, 8-3) jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Manteca answered with its game-changing rally in the bottom half.


Patterson 13, Sierra 4

Sierra (0-5, 5-5) was done in by eight errors in the VOL home loss.

Freshman Genyssa Rodriguez went 3 for 3 with a run for the Timberwolves. Giovanna Garcia (triple) and Valeria Villanueva (double, run, RBI) both finished 2 for 4. Sky Kane and Adriana Medieros each pitched in an RBI double.

Sophia Vannatta knocked in three runs for Patterson (2-2, 5-6), and Madison Trinta plated three.


Oakdale 7, East Union 1

Lily Pickering drove in Eli Flores (2 for 3) to give East Union (0-5 VOL, 7-7 overall) the lead in the second inning, but it was all Oakdale (3-1, 6-6) from there.

The visiting Mustangs took advantage of five errors, and Reese Donaldson led them with a double, a triple, two runs and three RBIs.


Hughson 2, Ripon 0

Emma Carne and Presley Wells drove in the two runs in the bottom of the first inning to propel Hughson (4-0, 10-3 overall) in the TVL first-place battle.

Ripon (3-1, 11-4) was limited to two hits by Kylie Tangney, who totaled 15 strikeouts. Addison Naranjo doubled for one of the Indians’ hits.


Hilmar 16, Ripon Christian 1 (5)

Annabelle Hoff doubled to plate Austynn MacWilliams in the top of the first inning for Ripon Christian (1-3 TVL, 2-8 overall)


BOYS GOLF

Trans Valley League

Low medalist Cru Sullivan finished 8-under-par 65 at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera, as Ripon dominated the third TVL tournament of the season with a team score of 365. Fellow Indians sophomore Andrew Bogetti was co-runner-up with a 69.

Ripon Christian, led by Hudson Schenk’s 69, was the second-place team with a 389. Hughson (447), Hilmar (462), Escalon and Sonora (470).

Richie Hughes contributed a 70 for Ripon, placing fourth individually. Alan Bunchien added a 76, and Ivan Castillo an 85.

Matthew Ubick (71), Carter Van Groningen (76), Thomas Graham (77) and Blake Stuit (96) rounded out scoring for Ripon Christian.


Western Athletic Conference

Lathrop placed fourth in the third league tournament of the season in Atwater. The Spartans finished with a 498 behind Beyer (456), Livingston (457) and Central Valley (489).

Brayden Beckmann was low medalist once again, scoring three birdies on the way to 4-over 76 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club. Raphael Iniguez followed with an 85.

Jasjeet Batthal (100), Bryce Rebeiro (118) and Ryan Cabanting (119) were the rest of the Spartans’ scorers.


BASEBALL

Lathrop 7, Johansen 3

The Spartans (3-3, 6-10 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and the lead held up for the Western Athletic Conference win.

Rueben Lopez gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings for the win. He and reliever Tommy Hammond (2 2/3 innings, save) each recorded four strikeouts in the combined five-hitter.

Elijah McAllister (three RBIs) and Jaicob Ewing (triple, two runs) both went 2 for 3 to lead the offense. Vaughn Sanchez contributed an RBI triple and a run.
