ROUNDUP: Sierra upends Lancers in VOL girls tennis match

Sierra’s girls tennis team bounced back from its first Valley Oak League loss of the season on Tuesday, downing host East Union 7-2 at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

The Timberwolves (2-1 VOL, 2-2 overall) clinched the win by taking five singles matches.

Mikayla Villalobos won 6-3, 6-1 over Roshel Mathew at No. 2 singles. No. 3 Ruth Beedi cruised past Ashlynn Yang 6-1, 6-0. No. 4 Munveer Dosanjh defeated Jaklyn Virelas 6-0, 6-2; No. 5 Evelin Garcia dispatched Nancy Rattu 7-5, 6-2; and No. 6 Xitali Gonzales took care of Daisy Fernandez, 6-2, 6-0.

East Union (0-2, 0-3) took the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles contests. Samantha Escamilla coasted 6-2, 6-1 at the top of the ladder against Sasha Martin. The Lancers’ top pairing of Khalia Bagayas and Maria Kallandanthyll outlasted Janessa Felix and Bhavika Karthikeyan, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Sierra’s No. 2 tandem of Amara Kenechukwu and Melissa Castillo fended off Bianca Mundo-Caro and Ivanna Garcia, 6-2, 7-5. Mia Soza and Sadie Herrera won the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-2 over Adesh Pooni and Azul Orozco.

Sierra hosts reigning champion Mountain House on Thursday, while East Union travels to Patterson next Tuesday, Sept. 23.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lathrop 3, Ceres 1

The Spartans (3-0, 7-4 overall) warded off one of the chief challengers to their Western Athletic Conference crown on Monday, winning at Ceres (2-1, 3-4), 25-12, 25-27, 25-17, 25-23.

Erin Chunn (seven digs) and Siliana Fa’ataualofa (five digs) each produced 13 kills and five aces to lead the attack. Shakara Porter contributed four kills.

Ayden Petroff amassed 33 assists and 13 aces to go with two kills and two digs. Justine Mabutas collected 11 digs.

 

Ripon Christian 3, Fresno Christian 0

Paige Van Hofwegen registered 16 kills and 12 digs to lead the Knights (8-6) in their 25-19, 25-17, 25-10 non-league home win on Tuesday.

Alanna Blanco spearheaded the attack with 30 assists and five aces. Brynn Bohn added 11 kills. The defense was anchored by Lauren Mouw’s 13 digs and Haley Kootstra’s three blocks.

Ripon Christian resumes Trans Valley League play Thursday at defending champion Ripon.

 

Oakdale 3, East Union 0

East Union (0-3 VOL, 4-11 overall) came up short on the road Tuesday, 19-25, 15-25, 18-25.

Lily Grove led the Lancers with five assists and two aces. Jocelyn Pena picked up five digs. Shebra Rezaye chipped in two kills, three digs and a block. Kennedy McLeod led the defense with three blocks and two digs. Isabella Martinez Lopez also had three blocks.

 

GIRLS GOLF

East Union 184, Patterson 225

The Lancers (3-0 VOL, 5-0 overall) continued their undefeated start Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Golf Course.

Jessica Ingalls led the way with a 4-over-par 31, and Arianna Pale scored a 32. Allie Farias contributed with a 37, while Kaylee Brown and Eva Diaz each had a 42.

 

Central Valley 173, Lathrop 200

Lathrop was led by a pair of 48s from Ashley Abon and Janeese Romo in the WAC dual match at St. Stanislaus Golf Course.

Kriselle Matela followed with a 51, Shelby Jauregui a 53 and Savanna Quezada a 54.

Low medalist Emily Mariani paced Central Valley with a 39.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL

Ceres 20, Lathrop 14

In Ceres, the Spartans (2-1 WAC, 7-2 overall) had a seven-game winning streak end.

Luz De Luna completed 21 of 34 passes for 311 yards and touchdown passes to Faith Allen (five receptions, 117 yards) and Jaleiyah Ray (seven receptions, 116 yards). De Luna also completed two passes on conversion tries and was intercepted twice.
Angelique Gonzalez led the defense with seven tackles, while Ray came up with two interceptions. Aaliyah Thompson pitched in a sack, and Abby Renteria had an interception.

Lathrop 2, Ceres 0

Andrea Lemus served up six aces and hammered five kills in the Spartans’ 25-19, 25-17 sweep on the road.

Alexza Bringas spearheaded the attack with eight assists and three aces. Audrina Fisher crushed four kills, and Lilyana Murillo chipped in six digs and three assists.

Ceres 6, Lathrop 0

Ayeli Amezcua and Jacqueline Avalos highlighted the defensive battle for Lathrop with five and four tackles, respectively.

Madilynn Narungary led the offense with five receptions for 48 yards.

 

Frosh girls volleyball

Lathrop 2, Ceres 0

The Spartans coasted to the 25-13, 25-19 victory.

Lanayah Denson led the balanced attack with seven kills and three aces. Setter Juliet Tara handed out 13 assists. Ne’myah Belion produced five aces, three kills and a block. Zakia Booker chipped in three kills and an ace. Arianna Sheel registered four aces, two assists and five digs.
