Lathrop’s boys tennis team had little trouble in dispatching visiting Johansen on Wednesday in an 8-1 Western Athletic Conference win at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.

Gabriel Godinez swept 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match against Jose Herrera. No. 2 Aram Baltazar took care of Andy Lyek, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 3 Eli Poklay downed Xzavier Jaurego, 6-3, 6-4.

Adam Godinez (6-0, 6-0) and Gurmatt Singh (6-1, 6-0) dominated at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Johansen’s lone win came from the No. 4 match, as Julian Mendoza beat Sage Coates, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Daya Singh and Niko Ruiz handled Krishao Nior and Fabian Martinez 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 matchup. Tristan Vuong and Noah Talania won 6-0, 6-3 against Alex Hill and Yanir Saavedra. Johansen forfeited the third doubles contest.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Sierra 3, Manteca 2

The host Timberwolves (4-0, 11-6 overall) is alone atop the Valley Oak League after fending off the reigning champion, 25-12, 12-25, 17-25, 25-14, 16-14.

“I couldn’t be more proud or excited for our boys,” Sierra coach Amy Rosendin said. “They started strong, but never gave up when Manteca came on strong in the second and third sets. We set the goal of getting out strong during the final sets. They really battled.”

David Caamano led the way with 10 kills, 18 digs, four blocks and three aces. Setter Primo Estandarte had 27 assists and eight blocks.

Xavier paced the attack with 11 kills, Owen Altadonna racked up 13 blocks to go with six kills, and Austin Kim collected 28 digs. Gurpreet Singh also keyed the defense with seven blocks.

Manteca (3-1, 14-7) was headed by Camden Steckler’s 18 kills and 19 digs. Julio Mateo contributed 12 kills, and Nick Grabowski had eight. Garrison Reis and Cedrick Maglinao anchored the back row with 20 and 17 digs, respectively.

 

Lathrop 3, Beyer 0

Jerico Santillan amassed 21 assists, seven aces, six kills and five digs as the Spartans (9-1 WAC, 15-5 overall) coasted to the 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 road sweep.

Gabriel Fa’ali’i added 12 kills and six digs. Christian Buerster had six kills and three total blocks. Lucas Baluyut registered 31 digs and five aces. Alexander Vere chipped in 14 assists, three digs and two aces.

 

BASEBALL

Lathrop 6, Grace Davis 3

Lathrop (4-4 WAC, 5-7 overall) avenged its loss from Monday.

Jasper Tovar pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks. The host Spartans led 6-3 before Grace Davis (1-6, 1-7) was able to scratch across two in the top of the seventh inning. Tovar was also 2 for 4 with a double, two steals and a run on offense.

A.J. Duenez continued his season-long tear, going 4 for 4 with a triple, two steals, one run and one RBI. Mathew Rankin finished 2 for 3 with a double and a run.

 

Manteca 10, Kimball 0 (5)

Colton Murillo twirled a mercy-shortened two-hitter for the visiting Buffaloes (2-0 VOL, 10-3 overall), striking out five and walking three. He was also 2 for 2 with a double, two runs and an RBI at the plate.

He was supported by a 12-hit attack. Rex Watson went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and a run. Chris Chavez (double, RBI, run) and Preston Smith (two runs) doled out two hits apiece. Jace Quitasol drove in a pair of runs.

 

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Ripon 68, Hughson 68

The host Huskies won the mile relay at the end of the Trans-Valley League meet to force a rare tie. Both teams are now 2-0-1 in league duals.

Jacob Allen spearheaded the Indians with wins in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay sprints. Marcus Madoski won the high and triple jumps. Brett Shaw was first in the 300 hurdles, and Liam Ferris had the top mark in the discus throw.

 

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Ripon 108, Hughson 29

Ripon dominated to improve to 3-0 in league.

Jenna Skavdahl (400, 800), Annie Wild (1,600; 3,200) and Gabby Delgado (shot put, discus) each took first in two individual events. Olivia Maragos (100), Emily Paxton (200), Starla Skiles (300 hurdles), Jade Thommes (pole vault) and Maddison Lopez (triple jump) also contributed first-place points.

Rylee Agbayani-Duenas joined Maragos, Skiles and Paxton on the winning 4x100. Wild, Skavdahl, Paxton and Skiles won the mile relay.

 

JV boys volleyball

East Union 2, River Islands 0

The Lancers dominated, 25-15, 25-8.

Gabe Torres led them with three kills and two blocks. Rudy Rocha also rapped three kills. Ian Wilcox strung together four aces, and Klaio Simpao had three to go with six assists.

 

Manteca 2, Sierra 0

A.J. Palmer amassed nine kills, as the Buffaloes held on for the 25-17, 25-23 sweep.

Jesus Gomez chipped in five kills and seven digs for the Buffaloes. Josiah Sagapolu added three kills and five digs.

 

Lathrop 2, Beyer 0

Lathrop swept, 25-17, 25-18.

Yuvraj Dhillon accumulated four kills and three digs. Persius Fa’ali’i tallied three kills and three digs.

Cameron Loyola had four aces and four digs. Jorge Reyes led them with 14 assists, four aces and four digs.
