ROUNDUP: Undefeated Spartans dominate West with post play

Freshman Breanna Wiseman scored 20 points, and fourth-year starter Shakara Porter narrowly missed a triple-double, as the Lathrop girls basketball team remains undefeated after rolling past visiting West of Tracy on Wednesday, 56-31.

The Spartans (7-0) jumped out to an 18-6 lead and held West (3-5) to six or less points in each of the first three quarters while forcing 15 turnovers in that stretch.

Porter finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Wiseman added nine rebounds, to blocks and two steals to her game-high scoring total.

“We identified what we thought would be our advantage on the inside, and we attacked it with Breanna and Shakara,” Lathrop coach Dwayne Davis said. “We scored 56 points and only took four shots behind the (3-point) arc.”

Jaleiyah Ray returned from injury and chipped in nine points, three steals and two rebounds.

Lathrop begins the Delta Queen Classic at Stagg today against Fairfield.

 

Ripon Christian 33, Downey 27

Rhian Huevel poured in 14 points, while Michaela Oosterman contributed eight to help Ripon Christian (2-2) open the Downey Tournament with a win.

The Knights next face Sonora tonight at 7:30.

 

Bear River 37, Ripon 26

The Indians (4-4) struggled to get untracked offensively and only scored two points in the fourth quarter of their first-round contest at the Liberty Ranch Tournament.

Scarlett Ponce hit two 3s in the first half and led Ripon with nine points. Gabby Sams amassed 20 points for Bear River (4-3).

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Ripon Christian 64, Chavez 37

Jake Vander Veen resumed his early-season scoring binge Wednesday in the Mark Gallo Invitational opener at Central Catholic.

The senior guard knocked down four 3s on the way to his game-high 24 points. The Knights (3-2) rallied for an 18-4 run in the second quarter to create separation. They led Chavez (2-5) 50-28 after three quarters.

Chase Bunnell pitched in with 11 points. Mason Tameling, playing his first game of the season, added five points in limited action.

Ripon Christian tangles with Downey tonight at 6:30.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Manteca 3, Linden 0

The Buffaloes (5-1) built on their one-goal halftime lead with two tallies in the first seven minutes of the second half at Linden (6-3).

Kailee Jackson scored one and assisted another. Freshman Miah Martinez scored first off an assist from Makayla Spencer. Paisley Coenenberg capped the scoring.

Manteca kicks off its annual Buff Cup tournament Friday at 3 p.m. against Los Banos.

Zoha Ali highlighted the lopsided win for Lathrop with 22 points.
