Jack Thomson is calling all former Timberwolves.

Sierra High’s first-ever baseball coach is hosting an alumni meet-and-greet event on Friday when the team — now headed by son, Travis — take on rival Manteca. Jack recently established the Sierra Dugout Club to help reconnect with his former players and help them establish new connections among each other.

“I think it will be great for some of our younger guys who can see the successes of the older players, and not necessarily just in baseball,” the elder Thomson said. “We have doctors, or guys who have successful military careers. I’m just excited to see them.”

Although first pitch for the Valley Oak League game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, the meet and greet begins with a barbecue at around 3:15 down the left field line at Jack Thomson Stadium.

Thomson said it has been a challenge trying to get in touch with some of the original Timberwolves who played for him in the mid-to-late 90s, but he’s looking forward catching up with anyone who can make it.

“When the school opened back in 94-95, nobody had a cell phone,” he said. “For those first 10 years or so, it was hard to keep track of everyone.”

Thomson served as Sierra baseball coach for the first 23 years of the school’s existence, compiling a 355-233-5 record. He previously coached across town at Manteca, and his 607 total career wins stands as the most among coaches in the southern half of the Sac-Joaquin Section. He coached his final game on May 24, 2018 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III consolation semifinal against Christian Brothers.

Travis Thomson took over the following year, leading the team to its sixth VOL championship.

“We haven’t gone through 10 different coaches, we’ve had two,” Jack Thomson said. “It’s a family atmosphere, and we want to continue that.”
