Sierra lands pair of seconds at 8th annual Invitational

The Sierra High Cross-Country program narrowly missed out on closing out its 8th Annual Sierra Invitational with a boys and girls small-schools varsity championship, finishing second to Cosumnes Oaks and St. Mary’s in the boys and girls side, respectively.

Ricky Morris was the area’s top finisher in boys action, finishing the course in 16:47, good for a sixth-place overall finish. Kyle Furtado’s time of 18:12 was the only other area runner to finish in the top-25.

East Union closed out the invitational with a 13th place finish, lead by junior Aaron Garcia’s time of 20:24.

The Lady Timberwolves were just seven points behind eventual meet champion St. Mary’s, getting a strong showing from Francis Scherry who ran an impressive time of 20:54, which was good for 10th place overall.

Kelly Paredes was behind Scherry with a race of 22:29, followed by Patricia Angel (23:45), Katelyn Carbiener (22:43 ) and Jessica Montiel (23:29).

East Union finished the invitational with a fifth place team finish, led by Alejandra Alvarez’ time of 21:43. Her race was 17th overall out of over 150 racers. Teammate Jessie Martin (23:44) followed her and Sarah Jackson was third on the Lancers with a time of 25:26.

16th Annual Condor Earlybird Invitational
The Manteca Buffaloes traveled to Salinas to take place in the 16th running of the invitational, hosted by the North Monterey County High School. Manteca joined some 75 programs who competed on the 3-mile course.

Manteca’s boys side was led by Tim Baker (18:19), followed by Mario Gaytan, Ben Tolman and Elijah Taylor. The Girls squad was paced by Breanna ARodriguez’ 25:31, followed by teammates Gabby Escobedo and senior Briana Lucas.

The Buffaloes will open their Valley Oak League season Sept. 29 in Modesto.
