Diana Reyes got her first goal of the evening six minutes into Sierra’s game at Ripon Christian on Wednesday.
The Timberwolves went on to score the first six goals in the 8-1 non-league girls soccer win.
Reyes had a foot in the second goal, as well, when she placed a corner kick nearly into the net before Natalie Ruvalcaba headed it in.
“My teammate (Zoe Sutton) passed it to me,” Reyes said. “She made a through ball, and I dribbled, shot and I made that first goal.
“We work on the corner kicks at practice and it worked out well tonight.”
Maitland Kohoutek tallied the third goal for Sierra (7-1) when she unleashed a bullet from 25 yards out from the midfield that exploded into the net.
“A lot of times I am open on the negative balls,” Kohoutek said. “We don’t really utilize it a lot but today we did and my friend Zoe (Sutton) played me a great ball back.
“I took a touch, powered through the ball and it hit top left.”
Reyes (two assists), Kaylee Rodriguez (assist) and Ruvalcaba posted a brace apiece. Sutton (assist) added a goal and Kohoutek an assist.
“I felt really well,” Timberwolves coach Manuel Pires said. “We moved the ball around really well, and we had some very good opportunities. Our goal was to get out of here with a win, and I like how we held good possessions.
“Our goal keeper made a couple of good saves in the first half, and in the second half they were able to get their one goal.”
Sierra took 48 shots, 24 on frame.
“Their goalie (Kylie Koolhaas) was very good,” Pires said. “She did a very good job.
“I have to give it to her. She played a very good game.”
Koolhaas made 16 saves. Timberwolves goalie Ava Bonilla had to make just four saves.
Near the midpoint of the second half, Brooke Barnes got the Knights (4-1-1) on the board when she handled a rebound for the score.
“I was thinking I had to go to the ball and be aggressive,” Barnes said. “And to try and get anything on it.
“I was just kind of hoping it would hit the back of the net and it did.”
Trailing 5-0 at the half, Ripon Christian played a much better second half.
“We feel a lot better about the second half,” Knights coach David Morris said. “We got rocked in the first half and we told the girls at halftime it was 0-0. We played to a 1-1 tie for a little bit in the second half but in our minds we lost the second half, 3-1.
“We scheduled this on purpose. We want our girls to learn and develop, and Sierra is such a great program, and it is great for us to face that high level of soccer and to see the way we want to play and wish to play. There are good lessons for us in playing a powerhouse like them, and we want to learn playing against a high-level team.”
Sierra kicks off its Vern Gebhardt Cup Friday afternoon against Central Catholic at 12:30 and Friday night at 6 Ripon Christian travels to Visalia to face Central Valley Christian.
