MODESTO — Sierra High’s three-time defending Valley Oak League champion girls swim team picked up where it left off in its 2010 non-league opener against Downey Thursday, cruising to a 116-53 victory.

The boys team was edged out 91-74 but had its share of standout performances. The girls junior varsity team won, 71-47.
The Lady Timberwolves won nine of the 11 events and swept two of them.

Kara Hall led the way with two individual first-place finishes, winning the 200 medley in 2 minutes, 27.38 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.02.

Megan Viduya spearheaded a 1-2-3 swept in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 1:06.45 in front of teammates Nike DeGeorge and Jessica deGroot.

Others winning events were Christina Ngo (50 freestyle, 27.97), Samantha Jones (500 freestyle, 6:46.22) and De George (100 freestyle, 1:02.36).

Sierra also won the 200 medley relay, 400 relay and swept the 200 relay.

Sierra’s boys led 15-14 after the meet’s second event, the 200 freestyle, but struggled to keep up with Downey’s depth for the remainder of the meet.

Four different Timberwolves each claimed an event: John Osborn in the 200 freestyle (2:11.24), Ryan Melton in the 100 butterfly (1:13.51), Zac deGroot in the 100 backstroke (1:17.15) and Zach Holmstrom in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.42).

Sierra also won the 200 relay.
