SOCCER ROUNDUP: East Union prevails in top-10 showdown with Johansen

Yandel Gutierrez’s goal contributions catapulted the East Union boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Johansen on Tuesday in a battle between two highly-ranked teams.

The Vikings (4-1-2) from Modesto came in ranked fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section, according to MaxPreps ratings, and No. 1 in Division II. East Union (9-2-1) is 10th in the section and fifth in D-III.

Gutierrez scored and then assisted the go ahead goals for the Lancers. The sophomore first scored off a set piece teed up by Ben Diaz in the 15th minute, blasting it to the net from about 25 yards out.

East Union gave up a penalty kick in the 50th minute but recaptured the lead with 11 minutes left. That was when Damian Valencia scored the winner off a feed from Gutierrez.

The Lancers will be tested again Friday and Saturday in the Buff Collegiate Showcase. They open with unbeaten Venture Academy on Friday at Modesto Junior College.

 

Manteca 1, Linden 0

Manteca goalie Alberto Gutierrez blocked a free-kick attempt from the visiting Lions (1-7-2) on the final play to preserve the Buffaloes’ fourth clean sheet of the season. It was his fourth save in the non-league match.

Manteca (5-1-2) broke the ice in the 62nd minute with Anthony Espinosa’s headed attempt following a free kick into the box from Kevin Mundo.

The Buffaloes head to Calaveras today.

 

Varsity girls

Ripon 3, Downey 0

The Indians (8-3) secured the win with two goals in the final three minutes in Modesto, and both were assisted by Danielle Rey.

Mia Hendryx scored goals in the 7th and 79th minutes, while Alexis Zamora struck in the 77th. Sophomore goalkeeper Giuliana Locarnini had two saves in Ripon’s seventh shutout of the season.

Manteca takes on Tracy on the road today.

 

Manteca 2, West 1

Natalia Ramirez scored the go-ahead goal in the second half of the non-league game mostly dominated by the visiting Buffaloes (4-1).

Manteca fired 27 shots, while West (4-4) converted on its lone attempt. Brooklyn Cornish knocked in the first goal of the match with a header on Kailee Jackson’s corner kick.

The Buffs travel to Linden today.
