Manteca’s girls soccer team overcame a tough Pitman team in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs on Friday, winning 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Kailee Jackson.
The deciding moment was set up by senior Joanna Roa, who is making a late comeback in her senior season after knee injuries kept her shelved for much of the past two years.
She evaded a defender and delivered the through pass to Jackson, who cut across the goal and got the shot off while under pressure.
“It was a fast and physical game,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “They have a strong midfield, so our midfield had their work cut out for them all game long. We were able to capitalize on that opportunity and get out of there with a win.”
Opportunities did not come often for the seventh-seeded Buffaloes (18-5-4), who attempted seven shots to 10 for No. 10 Pitman (7-6-2).
Pacific-bound center defender Brooklyn Cornish helped keep the Pride attack at bay, and goalkeeper Tina Macomber came up with five saves.
Manteca travels to No. 2 Rocklin (13-4-1) next Monday. The Thunder thumped No. 15 West, 4-0.
