East Union’s boys soccer team beat another ranked opponent Friday during the Buffalo Collegiate Showcase at Modesto Junior College West Campus.

Ranked 10th in the Sac-Joaquin Section, the Lancers knocked off No. 12 Venture Academy, 2-1.

It was the first loss of the season for the Mustangs (5-1-1) from Stockton, who also came into the game ranked No. 1 among Division IV schools in the section. On Tuesday, East Union (9-2-1) handed overall fourth-ranked Johansen its first defeat.

Yandel Gutierrez notched the deciding goal on a second-half set piece. Angel Medina opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a feed from Ben Diaz. Venture Academy tied it 14 minutes later on a counterattack.

East Union wraps up the showcase today against Emerald of Dublin at Manteca High. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

Downey 1, Lathrop 0

Top ranked in the SJS to start the week, Lathrop (7-2-1) took a second straight one-goal loss despite out-possessing and outshooting its opponent at the Buffalo Collegiate Showcase.

“Ball didn’t bounce our way,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said. “So many opportunities, we’ve just been in one of those little slumps.”

The good news for the Spartans is that their top player, Alan Hernandez, got to make his season debut in limited minutes. He missed their first nine games while finishing out his commitments to a club team.

Lathrop will look to rebound this morning at 10 against Ripon at Manteca.
