The Ripon and Ripon girls soccer teams enjoyed a successful weekend at the Oakdale Mustang Invitational.
Ripon went 3-1 and placed second in the competitive Premier Division, while RC finished 3-0-1 in winning the Gold Division.
The Knights edged out Edison 2-1 in the Gold final on Saturday, battling back from a halftime deficit with second-half goals. Brooke Barnes put away Alanna Blanco’s cross for the equalizer 2 minutes into the second half.
Ripon Christian (4-1-1) capitalized in the final minutes when play was stopped for an Edison handball about 25 yards away from the Vikings goal. Freshman Caitlin Walton rose to the occasion, targeting the top-left corner for the winner.
On Friday, the Knights opened the tournament with a pair of shutouts. They first blanked Grace Davis 3-0, getting goals from Gold Division MVP Tatum Sonke, Kylie Koolhaas and Raegan Burgess. Paige Van Hofwegen and Barnes each had an assist.
Koolhaas struck for the lone goal in game 2, a 1-0 victory over Livingston. Ripon Christian capped pool play Saturday morning with a 2-2 deadlock against eventual third-place finisher Johansen. Barnes and Blanco tallied one goal apiece, while Alyssa Hoffman had an assist.
Koolhaas’ role changed for the final, as she played goalie in place of injured senior standout Morgan Schenk.
In the Premier finale, Ripon (7-3) met Gregori for the second time in eight days dropped a 5-0 decision.
The Indians otherwise put forth a strong showing in the division, which featured five league champions and three league runners-up. They started with 3-0 and 4-0 clean sheets against El Capitan and Tokay, respectively, then held off Enochs, 1-0.
Danielle Rey spearheaded Ripon’s attack with five goals in the tournament. They resume their tough pre-league schedule tonight at Downey, while Ripon Christian hosts reigning Valley Oak League champion Sierra on Wednesday.
Jerry Terpsma Classic
Host Ripon Christian (1-2-1) shared third place with Calaveras in the varsity boys tournament on Saturday.
The third-place match was halted prematurely in the second half after an injury sustained by Colton Velstra, who earlier scored the Knights’ goal off an assist from Reagan Sauer.
In the winner’s bracket semifinals, the Knights lost to Wheatland in a penalty-kick shootout after the two were locked in a 1-1 tie at full time. Collin LeCain scored for RC and was assisted by Talon Tameling.
Analy rolled to the championship with a 6-0 win over Wheatland.
