ELK GROVE – After the first day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field championships no local competitors advanced to the state championships, but one came close.

Sierra’s Onix Parades finished fourth in the pole vault at 14 feet, 8 inches, missing a ticket to state by one slot. But many others will get the chance again today when the championships resume at Elk Grove High.

The Manteca girls 400-meter relay team of Raygan Both, Summer Kirby, Sophie Berrigan, Jade Griffin – all sophomores except for Barrigan, a senior – finished with the seventh seed at 49.38 seconds.

“It is exciting that we are going on and we are so young,” Kirby said.

Sierra’s Nicholas Valdes was seventh in the 110 hurdles with the top eight competing today in the finals.

“I’m happy about it,” Valdes said. “I’ve run faster and I will have to do so tomorrow to place.”

Sierra’s Noveleen Thiara was sixth in the 400 (49.32).

East Union’s Jordan McNeal was seventh in the 100 (12.30) and was second in her heat.

“I wanted to win my heat,” McNeal said. “But second is OK. As long as I am moving on I am happy.”
