Manteca boys threepeat at Sierra meet; Ripon takes girls title

 Paced by several multi-event winners, the Manteca boys track and field team claimed a third consecutive title at The Timberwolf Invitational at Sierra High’s Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium on Friday.

The Buffaloes scored 112 points, holding off second-place Lathrop (92) and third-place Ripon (79). Sierra was fourth (73), and East Union fifth (66.5).

Returning state qualifiers Clara Schoolland and Starla Skiles led Ripon (125) to the girls championship. Manteca (86), Lathrop (77) and Sierra (73) followed in order. East Union (23.5) finished eighth in the 13-school field.

The top three relay teams and individuals earned medals.

Manteca distance standout Oscar Angel garnered three golds with wins in the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 35.15 seconds) and the 3,200 (9:56.92). He was also on the winning mile relay (3:35.88) with other top meet performers.

Jayden Scarver blazed to first-place finishes in the 200 (23.27) and 400 (51.96). Sophomore William Brown won the 110 hurdles (15.81) and took second in the 300 hurdles. Joseph Habibi won the 100 (11.12) and was third in the long jump.

Angel was joined by Brown, Habibi and Scarver on the 4x400. Tyler Watkins joined Brown, Scarver and Habibi on the runner-up 4x100 relay.

Joshua Mellion anchored the Buffaloes in the field events, winning the discus with a personal record toss of (142-07) as well as the shot put (49-0).

Skiles won every event she participated in for the Ripon girls. The senior coasted to wins in the 100 hurdles (16.11), 300 hurdles (50.16), 4x100 (51.14) and 4x400 (4:21.28).

Schoolland won the 400 (1:01.93) and high jump (5-02) and took second to Skiles in the 300 hurdles. She was also a member of the mile relay with Olivia Ellis and Emily Paxton. Ellis placed third in both the 100 and 200. Rylee Agbayani-Duenas (second, 200) and Paxton were part of the 4x100.

Elena Parenti (third, 100 hurdles; third, high jump), Kaiya Kroutil (third, 400) and Mallory Govia (second, 3,200) also contributed to the Indians’ team title.

Meet host Sierra had its share of individual standouts.

Janessa Barnes set personal records in winning the 200 (27.33) and taking second in the 400. Olivia Knott took first in the long jump (15-02) and second in the triple. Anayah Wills won the 100 (12.95) and led the third-place 4x100 with Khamylle Bollengier, Felisa Beard and Alani Mullenix.

Sierra’s winning girls 4x800 (11:04.40) comprised of Serena Dittman (third, 800); Alyssa Rodriguez, Mikayla Villalobos and Anna Dittman.

Christian Gonzalez spearheaded the Sierra boys with a win in the 800 (2:04.69) and a second in the 1,600. Mantoj Grewal won the 300 hurdles (44.13), Asaad Doby was the runner-up in the discus and Landen Nabb took third in the 800.

Manteca’s girls were paced by Jordyn Hegarty, who won the 3,200 with a personal-best 12:41.89 and took second in both the 800 and 1,600.

Rylan Steckler was the pole winner (8-06) and high jump runner-up. Raniya Nelson took the shot put title (30-08). Alana Sumaylo (second, shot put), Gabby Leon (third, long jump) and Paisley Coenenberg (third, 1,600) also earned medals.

Ripon’s boys fared well in the relays. The 4x100 quartet of Nathan Curless, Dru Orlando (second, 100), Nathan Gaines and William Wohle won in 44.04 seconds. High jump champion Marcus Madoski (6-0) took second in the mile relay with Ricky Langenfeld, Eric Guevara and Christian Peoples. The third-place 4x800 was made up of Lucas de Vera, Matteo de Vera, Landen Morse and Langenfeld.

Ryan Bell (third, discus), Logan Lefebvre (second, long jump) and Jude Viss (third, triple jump) were among the Indians’ top-three medalists.

Gavin Miller highlighted Lathrop with a win in the pole vault (14-06).

Other Spartans with top-three finishes: Nathaniel Kusske (second, 400), Jarren Holloway (third, 400), Riley Gier (second, 800; third, 1,600); Treydon Santos (third, 300 hurdles; second, high jump); Pablo Peña (second, shot put); Everardo Gomez (second pole vault), Sadeon Lungay (second, triple jump); Mackenzie Collins (third, 3,200); Ava Green (second, 100 hurdles; third, 300 hurdles), Alyvia Galano (second, pole vault) and Kirat Sidhu (second, long jump; third triple jump).

Lathrop was also second in the girls 4x400, which included Sierra Adams, Melia Lewis, Aleena Basi and Green.

East Union’s boys 4x800 of Pierre Rodriguez, Angel Medina, Manuel Curiel and Daniel Medina won in 9:08.10. The girls 4x800 (Trinity Kemptner, Abigail Guevara, Serenity Smith, Alysia Sinclair) took third.

Lancers earning medals: Darrion Brown (third, 100; third, 200); Cesar Salinas (third, 100; second, 200), Mario Quezada (second, 110 hurdles), R.J. Fontanilla (third, high jump), Sean Rutter (third, pole vault) and Evelyn Villagrana (second, 80-09).

Salinas was also on the third-place mile relay with Anthony Morales, Gunnar Fay and Jackson Pellizzari.
