The Sierra girls soccer team split its first two games in the 18th annual Vern Gebhardt Champions Cup on Friday, and the Timberwolves will need some help to get a chance to defend their own tournament’s title.
The top two teams in each four-team pool squares off at 2:30 p.m. for the championship at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium. The third-place match takes place at 1.
Sierra had its way against Chavez, getting four different goal scorers. Freshman Zoe Sutton led the way with two goals and an assist. Lindsey Rose added one goal and two assists. Hailey Cruz tallied her team-leading 13th goal. Leslie Reyes also scored one, and Haley Gama added an assist.
Zoe Sandoval kept the sheet clean with two saves.
Cortez Bricelena’s first-half goal was the difference in Sierra’s loss to Galt. It was one of just three shots on goal allowed by the Timberwolves, who tested Galt’s Kylee Chapman with 20 of their own but could not get one through to the net.
Ripon (3-2-1) has a chance to make it to the final out of Pool B after getting results in its first two contests. The Indians blanked Central Catholic 2-0 before drawing with Kimball, 1-1. They have a tough matchup ahead with Lodi at 10:30 this morning. Lodi (7-1) was stunned by Kimball (5-2-2), 3-2.

Joanna Roa scored the first three goals, and tourney host Manteca continued to find the net at will.
Kailee Jackson put away the next two. Sienna Jones and Paisley Coenenberg each contributed a goal and an assist.
Goalie Haylie Brasil converted on a penalty kick. Gabriela Ramos capped scoring with the final two goals.
Kaley Crawford, Makayla Spencer, Layla Flanigan, Makenzie Forsberg and Gina Hirle each had an assist.
The Buffs play Edison (3-3) at 10 a.m. in the semifinals. The winner plays Central Valley (1-7) or Sonora (3-2) in the championship at 1:15.
