RIPON – Ripon High senior Ty Wells had his swan song Saturday, and he closed out his participation in the Ervin Zador Invitational in grand style.
Swimming in his fourth Zador Invitational in his home pool and already having qualified for the Sac Joaquin Section Championships for a jaw-dropping fourth year in a row, Wells brought home four gold medals from the meet named for his mentor.
“This meet is named for Ervin Zador,” Wells said. “I really take the time to remember what Ervin did for me even though I was with him for only a short time. I met Ervin in Sept. 2011, and he passed away the following January. He was like no other coach I have ever had, except for maybe his son Eric.
“This is one of my favorite meets to go to – swimming at home in an invitational with teams we don’t usually swim against. It is nice to swim against teams from different areas to see where I am at compared to Turlock and Stockton.”
Wells won the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 59.83 seconds), 100 breast (1:00.05), was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:45.91) and 200 free relay (1:33.62) with Noah Esenwein, Lucas Esenwein and Connor Self.
Ripon’s Mallory Brubaker won the 200 free (2:03.09), 500 free (5:20.95) and was third in the 200 free relay (1:52.17) with Madyson Valencia, Kate Villegas and Emma Ayers and fifth in the 400 free relay (4:30.57) with Amy Bacay, Molly Burton and Eleanor Tran.
“It has been an honor to swim in this meet for four years,” Brubaker said.
“I was a little off of my goal times for today. I did what my coach asked me to do and that was kind of the plan.”
A perennial powerhouse due to talented swimmers, the Indians have an infusion of freshman that is affording Ripon depth it has not normally enjoyed. Both the boys and the girls Indians won the team portions of the invitational.
“We are looking pretty good this year” Ripon coach Erik Zador said. “We are pretty deep.
“We have always had some high-end swimmers but we have never had the depth. And this year we have a lot of talented freshmen coming in so we have the depth which is really great so we get to compete a little bit better with some of these better teams.”
Ripon’s Amber Scheid was on the winning 200 free relay (1:46.80) with Chloe Winter, Elizabeth Wenner and Ashtyne Topie, second in the 100 breast (1:14.08) and third in the 200 free (2:07.44). The B 200 Medley Relay of Ashstyne Topie, Burton, Tran, Madyson Valencia finished third (2:09.48). Wenner won the 100 back (1:04.59), Topie was second in the 50 free (27.64), Bacay was second in the 100 back (1:06.27) and 100 free (59.25), Tran was second in the 200 individual medley (2:25.84), Wenner was second in the 100 fly (1:03.63) and Burton was third in the 100 free (1:01.54).
Lucas Eisenwein won the 50 free (22.61) and 100 free (49.96) and Noah Esenwein was third in the 50 free (23.56). Other Ripon boys placers were Maika West (second, 500 free, 5:23.35; second, 200 free, 2:01.22) , Kai West (third, 500 free, 5:25.03; third, 200 free, 2:02.64) and Self (third, 100 back, 1:06.13).
Ripon Christian’s Emma Magnussen won the 200 individual medley (2:21.95) and 100 fly (1:00.92) with teammate Rylee Biedleman winning the 100 breast (1:13.35) and 100 free (56.77).
Sierra’s Nicholas Brink won the 200 free (1:57.27) and 500 free (5:10.55) and teammate Erik Enriquez was second in the 100 fly (1:00.35).
