WEEKEND: Calderara, Ripon surge past Stagg for 1st boys basketball win

Ripon’s boys basketball team got off the schneid Saturday in Tracy, capping the West Tournament with a 59-46 over Stagg in the seventh-place game.

The Indians (1-5), who dropped their first five games of the season, broke away with a 22-point fourth quarter. Gino Calderara was at the center of the late flurry, scoring 11 of his game-high 31 points in the final period.

AJ Vanderwerff (six rebounds), Cooper Morino and Tip Paini contributed six points apiece.

Howard Austin sparked a sizzling start for Stagg (4-7), scoring 13 points as the Delta Kings raced to a 17-11 lead. He was held to just two points on free throws the rest of the game.

Ripon next competes in the Motherlode Madness Tournament starting Wednesday against West Campus at 5 p.m.

 

River Islands 73, Dixon 54

The Riptide (4-5) followed its worst effort of the young season with the best, dusting Dixon (3-4) with a hot shooting in the third place game of the Argonaut Quarterback Club Tournament.

Charles Mapanao and Dylan Peter paced four River Islands players in double figures with 15 points apiece. Mapanao accounted for five of his team’s 12 made 3-pointers, while Peter made five of six free throws.

Zac Basurto added 11 points, while Euan Costales added 10 points including three 3s off the bench.

River Islands jumped out to a 20-10 lead before stretching it to 43-25 at halftime, using a press defense to create easy baskets in transition.

The Riptide host Escalon on Tuesday for its only game of the week.

 

Beyer 63, Ripon Christian 50

Ripon Christian (4-4) dropped the third-place game in Central Catholic’s Mark Gallo Invitational.

Chase Bunnell led the Knights with 16 points, and all-tournament selection Jake Vander Veen had 11. Mason Tameling knocked down three 3s for his nine points.

Beyer (6-2) was anchored by 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior Curtis Harmon’s 22 points. Keimani Thompson, a 6-7 forward, added 18 points.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lathrop 44, Edison 27

The 10-0 Spartans conquered the Tony Contreras Delta Queen Classic with their dominant defensive effort on Saturday.

They held Edison (4-4) to eight or less point in every quarter while breaking it open with 28 points of their own in the middle periods. Lathrop took a comfortable 36-21 lead into the fourth.

Breanna Wiseman led Lathrop with 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Audrina Fisher pitched in eight points, Ja’Leiyah Ray racked up seven points and 10 rebounds, and Shakara Porter collected nine rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with her four points.

 

Valley Christian 61, Ripon 27

The Lions (7-1) from Roseville busted it open in the Liberty Ranch Tournament consolation final. They were spearheaded by Janet Donkor and Lydia Gunter, who each poured in 22 points.

Anandjap Dhami scored nine to lead Ripon (5-5).

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Manteca 4, Edison 0

It was all Manteca (8-1) in the Buff Cup championship game Saturday at Woodward Park.

Miah Martinez scored twice, while Kailee Jackson added one goal and two assists. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Kayla Flannigan added a goal.

Center midfielder Makayla Spencer earned the Golden Boot for the tournament. Defenders Brooklyn Cornish and Bianca Esparza also made all-tourney along with winger Paisley Coenenberg.
