Weston Ranch, RC collect baseball wins

STOCKTON – Weston Ranch used a 12-hit attack Monday to down host Franklin of Stockton 10-6 in non-league baseball action.

 Gabriel Melgar threw five strong innings for the Cougars (3-2), striking out six with for hits and a walk. David Baca came in to finish out the game for Weston Ranch.

 “Gabriel came out and threw strikes,” Cougars coach Dave Hager said. “We took care of the baseball and did what a good team needs to do to win.”

 Weston Ranch’s Anthony Aguilar was 2 for 3 with double, RBI, walk and three runs. Austin Cappas was 3 for 5 with two runs and Amir Bowen was 2 for 3 with three RBI, three stolen bases and two walks. Carlos Drain reached base on all five at-bats with a hit, hit by pitch, two walks, an error with one RBI.

Sophomore Will Gilbert but his best foot forward in his first varsity start for the Knights (3-2), throwing 5.2 strong innings.

 Gilbert showed composure in his first start, facing down a bases-loaded no-out jam when he fielded a come-backer for a double play and followed that with a strikeout. 

 Brock Nunes belted an RBI double for Ripon Christian and Declan VanVuren added an RBI single.  

 “It went well,” Knights coach John De Visser said. “We had good, timely hits.”
