Visalia Rawhide rolls past Modesto

VISALIA  (AP) — Ramon Hernandez hit a grand slam in the second inning, and Kevin McCanna allowed just four hits over seven innings as the Visalia Rawhide beat the Modesto Nuts 15-3 on Sunday.

The grand slam by Hernandez, part of a six-run inning, gave the Rawhide a 6-0 lead before Drew Ellis hit a two-run home run later in the inning.

Visalia later scored in three additional innings, including a five-run eighth, when Marcus Wilson hit a two-run single to help finish off the blowout.

McCanna (2-0) allowed one run while striking out seven and walking one to get the win.

Danny Garcia (0-4) went two innings, allowing eight runs and six hits in the California League game.


Visalia 5, Modesto 3

VISALIA  (AP) -- Daulton Varsho hit a run-scoring double in the first inning, leading the Visalia Rawhide to a 5-3 win over the Modesto Nuts on Saturday.

Kevin Ginkel allowed a run, but struck Gareth Morgan out with a runner on second to end the game for his third save of the season.

The double by Varsho started the scoring in a three-run inning and gave the Rawhide a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Drew Ellis hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Pavin Smith.

After the teams traded runs, the Nuts cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Anthony Jimenez scored on a wild pitch.

The Rawhide tacked on another run in the seventh when Raymel Flores hit an RBI double, bringing home Stephen Smith.

Modesto saw its comeback attempt come up short after Joe Rizzo hit an RBI double, bringing home Nick Zammarelli in the ninth inning to cut the Visalia lead to 5-3.

Junior Garcia (1-1) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Modesto starter Reggie McClain (1-2) took the loss in the California League game.
