1979: McCreath earns Buff football MVP honor

Thirty years ago, on December 27, 1979, junior forward Kelly Stewart buried a short jumper with just :03 left to power East Union High’s basketball team to a dramatic 46-45 upset victory over previously unbeaten Turlock High in an opening round contest in the 10th annual Oakdale Rotary Holiday Classic at Oakdale High. Stewart led Coach Bill Stricker’s EU five with 14 points, while Keith Windham added 13 more. It was Turlock’s first loss in 10 outings.

80 years ago: December 26, 1929 - The clash between the Manteca High basketeers and the Livermore High quintet ended with the Buffaloes on the winning end of the score 16-13. Coach Forrest Covey’s Buffaloes took the lead in the first quarter and retained that position throughout the game. Byron Gubbins was high point man with nine points to his credit for Manteca.

70 years ago: December 28, 1939 - Manteca High’s vaunted team finally went down to defeat for the first time this year in the field of sports when a sharp-shooting Turlock High five swept the Buffalo quintet off their feet in administering a stinging 38-23 lacing on the local hardwood last Friday evening. James Correa and George Dadasovich performed well for the localites, but their aid went for naught as the rest of the team just couldn’t click.

50 years ago: December 24, 1959 - Manteca High turned in one of their better performances of the season last night but they dropped a 62-50 decision to powerful Edison High. The Buffaloes, sparked by big Frank Lambert and a much improved Carl Conaway, were in the game until the final minute of the first half.

40 years ago: December 26, 1969 - Last week, the East Union High Lancers played their last game of 1969 when they took on Ripon Christian High in the Manteca High gym. They lost by a score of 89-68. Ken Richichi led the Lancers with 21 points and was followed by teammates Jeff Snyder with 15 and Mike Posey with 13 points.

30 years ago: December 26, 1979 - Three Manteca High football players received recognition for their outstanding achievements recently. Brian McCreath, a two-way starter, was named as the Buffaloes’ most valuable player for his role in the club’s 4-4-1 season. Steve Vasquez was named the most improved defensive lineman award and Darryl Quaresma, a center, was named the most improved offensive lineman.

20 years ago: December 28, 1989 - The East Union High girls’ basketball team won its first game in the Tracy Breakfasat Lions annual tournament last night. The Lady Lancers (3-8) put together their finest game in a 50-38 win over host Tracy High. Angie Paradzinski led the team with a 25-point effort. Brandi Loureiro (11 points) and Jill Widmer (10) also had fine efforts.

Sue Nunes stole the ball and made a layup with 58 seconds left as the Manteca High girls edged Concord-Clayton Valley High 57-56 at the Tracy Lions tournament Thursday night. Maci Buck netted 17 points, while Nunes added 16 to the winning total.

The Manteca High boys defeated Fairfield-Armijo High Thursday night in a hotly-contested 54-49 game in the Lodi tournament. Rick Mullen led all scorers with 17 points, while Rick Cresswell netted 16 and Davey Foehringer had 10 points, 10 assists and five steals for the Buffaloes.

East Union High, meanwhile, defeated Lodi High 50-47 on a late shot by Armando Avina. The Lancer junior had an 18-point effort, including his final basket with three seconds remaining. Eric Simoni finished behind Avina with 15 points.

Lathrop’s Scott Brooks saw eight minutes of playing time in the first half of the Philadelphia 76er’s game at Sacramento’s Arco Arena last night. The East Union High graduate had three points, a steal and an assist as the Kings won 114-111.

10 years ago: December 31, 1999 - Getting an early lead was enough for the Manteca High Lady Buffs as they took a 57-37 win over East Union High in their last game of the Tracy Breakfast Lions Club tournament last Thursday. Sara Cross and Tiffany Guzman netted 12 points apiece to pace the Lady Buffs. Samantha Cook led the Lady Lancer scoring with 10 points.

Vallejo High turned a close game into a rout as they beat the Sierra High girls 64-35 in the Tracy Lions tournament last night. Trish Werre, who made the all-tourney team, tossed in 10 points, while Brandi Galindo also collected 10.

Closing the pre-sseaon on a positive note, the Sierra High soccer team played Modesto-area power Downey High to a scoreless tie under the early mid-day sun in Manteca Thursday. The Lady Timberwolves have shut out six of their last nine opponents as they out-shot Downey nine to six.

Andrew Emery pumped in 24 points as Coach Eric Simoni’s East Union High team beat St. Patrick’s High of Vallejo 61-50 in the final round of the Alhambra Tournament yesterday. Wes Carter added 18 points and Daniel Taylor netted 11 points in the winning Lancer total. Emery was later named to the all-tourney team.
