Scott Brooks of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder isn’t the only East Union High graduate making a splash as a head coach these days.

Danelle Bishop (formerly Danelle Liles) had her season end Tuesday as interim head coach of the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team, which was eliminated by Northwest Missouri State 78-65 in the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Bishop and Brooks are two of three former East Union athletes to have their jerseys retired.

Cal Poly Pomona (28-5) upset No. 7-ranked Grand Canyon 68-61 last week for the West Region title. Before that, the No. 23 Broncos captured their first California Collegiate Athletic Association conference-tournament championship since 1998.

Bishop, a 1994 graduate of East Union, previously coached seven years at Azusa Pacific (four years) and Cal Baptist University, compiling a 138-88 overall record. She guided Azusa Pacific to four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament appearances and was the first women’s basketball head coach at CBU to lead the program to two consecutive winning seasons in 17 years.
