Oscar Guitron qualified for the USA Track & Field Region 14 Junior Olympics in three events and shattered personal records in each this past weekend in Hayward.

Guitron was one of nine members of the Manteca Track Club to compete in the Pacific Association Junior Olympic Trials at Chabot College, and six of them are advancing.

He placed third in the 11-12 boys division 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 1.88 seconds — almost 2 full seconds better than previous best. Guitron also excelled in the middle distances, finishing sixth in the 800 (2:31.8) and ninth 1,500 (5:06.26). He improved his 1,500 time by nearly 16 seconds. The top 12 finishers in each event are heading to regionals.

Three local shot putters are joining Guitron. Rumnic Cheema (15-16) and Anthony Santiago (17-18) each took sixth in their divisions, and Jorge Garcia (17-18) ended up eighth.

Katrina Martinez qualified in two events after sixth- and 12th-place finishes in the 17-18 girls high jump and discus, respectively. Cedric Harris-Dixon was 11th in the 15-16 boys long jump.

Also competing over the weekend were Lajolie Beugre (11-12 girls 200), Joey Rodriguez (17-18 boys 100, long jump) and Sianne Rodriguez (13-14 girls 100, 400).

The Region 14 meet takes place July 5-7 at Diablo Valley College in San Ramon. The top five placers from there advance to Nationals in North Carolina.
