STOCKTON — Sammy Solari has one championship locked down and he’s gunning for another in the final race of the season at Stockton 99 Speedway.

Or, for those who go further back with the Escalon driver’s legendary career, he now has nine track titles with an opportunity for No. 10 next weekend.

Solari entered Championship Night No. 1 on Saturday at Stockton 99 with a two-point lead over Mason Beghtel, the upstart teenager from Morada who was two days shy of his 17th birthday as he mashed the pedal toward the green flag next to the veteran for the 50-lap Stockton Late Model main event.

Beghtel, a three-time winner this season, gave Solari another battle, but Solari was in complete control in winning the race by 1.695 seconds to claim his second consecutive Stockton Late Model points championship and third overall. Solari won six Stockton Late Model feature races this season and has nine total.

“My crew talked all week that we had to control the whole day,” Solari said as family and friends celebrated around him in victory lane. “Last week (in the Pro Late Model race), it really came to just we needed to have a good finish and figure out what we needed tonight and dominate.”

Solari’s team put in the work, practicing Thursday and Friday at Stockton 99, and it yielded another title. Solari’s black No. 22 was the quickest car in both practice sessions by a full tenth of a second over Beghtel and the field of 11 on Saturday. Solari was then nearly a tenth quicker than Beghtel in qualifying with a lap at 14.479 seconds around Stockton 99’s quarter-mile paved oval. Beghtel’s best lap was a 14.554.

“We really put a lot of focus to it. My crew, and Mike David … my crew,” Solari said, pausing and repeating. “We really focused on tonight.”

In addition to just being faster than the rest of the field, Solari also had to duel Beghtel on two restarts, both of which took three laps before Solari reestablished the lead.

“I like the kid. The kid has a lot of talent,” Solari said of Beghtel. “One restart there, he actually got into my door, so he got a little jump on me. … It does take a lot of patience, and the problem is I’m not a patient guy. My car owner, he ain’t a patient guy. None of us are patient, we want to go.”

Danny DeVore of Stockton finished third and Tony Vincent fourth. DeVore and Modesto’s Nic Belletto, who drove the No. 74 family car made famous by Stockton 99 favorite Harry Belletto, battled for third late in the race, but Belletto’s car spun in turn 1 after being tapped and he finished fifth.

Solari and team now shift their focus to Championship Night No. 2 on Saturday, Oct. 24. He leads Hans Beeler of Ripon by 28 points with double points available. The race pays $10,000 to win.

“I gotta think about how I’m going to approach that race,” said Solari, who also owns Stockton 99 titles in the Mini Stock, Street Stock and Modified divisions over his career. “Hans can have the mindset to win the race; I gotta be within five, six spots of him. I gotta have that in my mindset to be able to do what I’m trying to do – win two championships.”

Legends of 99: Linden brothers Wyatt and Zach Sansom put on another two-man show in the 30-lap main event, but after swapping the lead on back-to-back laps, Wyatt held off Zach over the final 14 circuits and nipped him by .095 of a second in a drag race to the checkered flag.

In snapping Zach Sansom’s three-race win streak, Wyatt Sansom won the division championship in his first season running for points after placing second each of the last two years on an abbreviated schedule.

“The last few weeks he’s had the edge on me,” said Wyatt Sansom, who finished second to Zach each time during his win streak. “It feels good. I couldn’t let him get four in a row.”

Each won four main events this year, and their cars were again the two quickest among the 18-car field Saturday night. Zach Sansom was quickest in the first practice session with a Legends-best lap of 15.219 seconds on the night. Wyatt Sansom set the pace in the second session. Zach won the first heat and Wyatt won the second heat, their quick times just 4-hundredths of a second apart. Zach Sansom had the quickest lap in the main event on lap 26 as he tried to chase down Wyatt.

Rick Anderson started second and finished third while Patrick Geiger started first and finished fourth.

Grand American Modified: Scott Winters of Tracy led all 30 laps to win his fifth main event of the season and clinch his fifth points championship at Stockton 99 with the Wayne Ferrari team.

“This is huge. Wayne Ferrari, thank you so much,” said Winters, who won all but one main event this year. “We worked our butt off this year, had a little trouble here and there, but a real dominant car all year that put us in position to win this championship.”

Winters had the quickest car in each practice session and beat Sacramento’s Calvin Hegje to the checkered flag by 2.252 seconds. Hegje snapped Winters’ winning streak at four on Sept. 26.

“Every week the car comes apart, every little detail checked, and that’s why this car is so fast out here,” Winters said.

Aaron Coonfield of Riverbank won the trophy dash.

Fast Kar Solutions Mini Modified: Modesto’s Freddy Irvin capped a dominant season with his ninth main-event victory in 10 races and the points title. Holding the checkered flag, Irvin drove a clockwise lap around the track in honor of his dad, who passed away last year having never seen his son race.

Irvin, Patrick Geiger of Clovis and trophy dash winner Mike Brooks Jr. of Stockton were three wide in the front stretch on lap 5 before Geiger, driving the No. 12 car, headed to the infield. Irvin had the quickest lap at 16.167 seconds on lap 7 and drove inside and by Brooks on lap 10 of the 15-lap feature.

“Patrick said jump in the (No.) 21 and go win a championship, and that’s what I did,” said Irvin, who earlier won the Legends of 99 trophy dash. “Lots of good races this year. I can’t thank Patrick Geiger enough. This is his baby. He builds all these cars, he wrenches on them. It’s still kind of in one piece, Patrick.”

Championship Night No. 2 also includes Pure Stock and trailer racing plus drifting. Ticket prices are $25 for ages 16-59 and $20 for juniors ages 11-15, seniors 60 and over and military with an ID. A family pass (two adults, two juniors) costs $70. A pit pass costs $50 for all ages. Kids 10 and under are admitted for free, and parking is free at Stockton 99. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6. Visit stockton99.com or call 209.466.9999.
