SAN JOSE (AP) — Gianfranco Wawoe hit a two-run double in the first inning, leading the Modesto Nuts to a 7-3 win over the San Jose Giants on Monday.
The double by Wawoe started the scoring in a five-run inning and gave the Nuts a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Joe DeCarlo hit a two-run double and Eric Filia scored on a wild pitch.
Following the big inning, the Giants cut into the deficit in the third inning when Ryan Howard hit a two-run home run.
The Nuts later tacked on a run in both the fourth and ninth innings. In the fourth, Jordan Cowan hit an RBI double, while Chris Mariscal hit an RBI single in the ninth.
Modesto right-hander Nathan Bannister (2-1) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing three runs on nine hits over six innings. Opposing starter Mark Reyes (0-4) took the loss in the California League game after giving up six runs and eight hits over six innings.
