Manteca Police detectives  and members of the County Auto theft Unit called Delta Ratt using technology and old fashioned police work were able to locate and arrest Coy Lyn Mendoza, 26 of Manteca on a variety charges.

Mendoza earlier in the day had gone into a local health club for women and stole a purse and car keys belonging to one of the women in the club working out.  Mendoza then stole the woman’s 2008 GMC Denali.

A stolen auto report was taken. This is where technology took over directing police to where the suspect was located.  On-Star - an onboard computer system hooked up with GPS and live operators - was contacted. They were able to track the stolen vehicle to Modesto and then back to Manteca.   On-Star contacted Modesto and Manteca police and provided officers with turn by turn directions of the stolen vehicle.   Police Detective Jason Downs   set up a surveillance team to watch  the stolen vehicle once it was located at another health club on the east side of Manteca.  From there plain clothes officers working with the health club manager tracked the suspect into the health club where he was probably looking to steal more items from those working out. Mendoza  came out of the health club and was approaching the stolen vehicle when officers moved in to arrest him.

Mendoza decided to run from the officers. After a brief chase detectives were able to catch him about a half a block away.   Mendoza was charged with: burglary, auto theft, possession of  stolen property, and resisting arrest.

Detective Downs is investigating the possibility that Mendoza is responsible for other health club thefts.  If you have any information regarding Mendoza you are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 209-823-4636. You do not have to give your name.
