RIPON — Ripon Police officers interrupted a nude Manteca man as he was allegedly watching young females using binoculars from a position on the bank of the Stanislaus River as he was observed committing a lewd act upon himself.
Jerry Smekal, 55, of Manteca was arrested shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday and transported to the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.
Sergeant Steve Merchant said Smekal quickly dressed when he saw the officers. Merchant said Smekal admitted watching one woman and that he was nude in their presence.
Ripon officers Danny Sauer and Arleen Wells ordered the suspect to walk across the river and come over to them where he was handcuffed and taken into custody. He was charged with indecent exposure and for committing a lewd act in public.
Detectives said they are investigating the possibility that Smekal could have been involved in another case last year involving indecent exposure and for committing a lewd act in public during the summer of 2009.
Smekal is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bail with a court date today at 8:30 a.m. in the Manteca Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.
