WESTON RANCH – Kyla Virtue is battling sarcoma.
She’s the wife of Joey Virtue. He’s the world history teacher at Weston Ranch High and supporter of the school’s basketball programs.
The Cougar girls honored Kyla Virtue, who was diagnosed with the stage-4 cancer earlier in the school year, during their recently completed varsity hoop campaign consisting of a Valley Oak League title and a playoff appearance.
They did so by wearing teal or turquoise and purple shoelaces.
Those are Kyla’s favorite colors, according to Weston Ranch girls basketball coach Chris Bauer.
Her conditioned improved not too long ago, allowing for Joey Virtue to return for the last few games of the season. He often worked the shot clock, scoreboard or kept stats.
In addition, they have two children, Bailey, 5, and Mason, 2.
Kyla Virtue, meanwhile, is in need of more treatment.
“Because her case is complicated, she is seeking the help of specialists and alternative care, which is not covered by insurance,” said friends of the Virtue family. “We are not sure how much they need but they need help paying for treatment and some basic living expenses.”
A barbecue tri-tip beef dinner is planned on March 26 at Weston Ranch High.
Cost is $10. All proceeds will benefit Kyla Virtue with her cancer treatment.
