Big Valley Christian threatened Ripon Christian’s unbeaten streak of league boys volleyball matches the last time they met.
Ripon Christian left no doubt in the second go-around Monday in Modesto, sweeping 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 to clinch at least a share of the Trans Valley League championship with two league matches remaining. The Knights (10-0 TVL, 17-11 overall) have claimed seven consecutive titles, the first five in the Southern League, and are 60-0 all-time in conference play.
Last month, the Lions (7-2, 16-7) visited RC and took the home to a fifth set before ultimately falling. The Knights were without their top two setters, however.
A transfer from BVC, Luke Dorn got to play in the rematch, contributing 31 assists, three kills, three aces, six digs and two blocks. Mason Tameling amassed 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Ian Brown led the back row with 11 digs.
Grant Wentworth (three kills, four aces, two blocks, four digs), Darren Van Groningen (five kills, three blocks) and Trevor Van Groningen (six kills, four aces, five digs) were other key contributors.
Ripon Christian next hosts Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove on Thursday for a non-league match.
BOYS TENNIS
Central Valley 7, Lathrop 2
The Spartans put up a good fight against the Western Athletic Conference leader at Manteca Regional Tennis Center.
Third-set losses at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and a competitive sweep at No. 3 doubles were the difference.
Lathrop’s lone wins came at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Vincent Jiang won from the top soot 6-3, 6-3, while No. 2 Agam Singh battled for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) victory.
BASEBALL
Manteca 2, Mountain House 0
Brody Carabello and Brennen Vega plated unearned runs, and that was enough for the host Buffaloes (9-4, 16-7) in the Valley Oak League contest.
Mountain House (3-9, 11-11) committed four errors to mar a pitcher’s duel between Peter Conley and Manteca’s Matthew Suarez (five innings, three hits, two walks, three strikeouts). Nate Slikker pitched two perfect innings and struck out four to lock down the save.
Ripon Christian 21, Gustine 0 (5)
The Knights (18-2) belted 12 hits but also benefited from 13 walks and three hit batters.
Jackson Howell powered the attack with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs in a 3-for-3 effort.
Noah De Bruyn (double, two runs, two RBIs) and Talen Tameling (three runs, two steals, three RBIs) contributed two hits apiece. Trenton Cloward and Tyler Wadlow each knocked in two runs and scored two others. Stadtler Postma added a double, two runs and an RBI.
Cloward, De Bruyn, Howell, Postma and Tameling also pitched an inning apiece in the combined three-hitter.
SOFTBALL
Lathrop 6, Holt Academy 5
The host Spartans (9-6-1) scratched across the first four runs of the game in the third inning and held off a late charge for the non-league victory.
Holt Academy (12-6) rallied for all of its runs in the final three innings, including three in the top of the seventh
Luz De Luna led Lathrop, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Ja’Leiyah Ray was 2 for 3 with two runs and two steals.
