River Islands underclassmen receive top CCAA awards

Two underclassmen from River Islands were awarded with top awards for spring sports, capping the school’s historic second year with varsity athletics.

Sophomore setter Urijah DeOcampo received All-Central California Athletic Alliance boys volleyball MVP after leading the Riptide (6-0, 20-6 overall) to its first league championship and the first postseason victory for any River Islands team.

The baseball team (6-2, 15-8) won its playoff opener a week later. Freshman Cassious Orndoff was named All-CCAA Pitcher of the Year.

The Riptide softball team (4-4, 8-11) also received a major award, as junior infielder/pitcher Octavia Orndoff got Most Outstanding Player.

Thirteen River Islands athletes in all were selected to the three spring sports all-league teams.

Boys volleyball

The Riptide overthrew defending champion Holt Academy for the CCAA crown, winning 18 of 21 sets.

DeOcampo was at the center of the attack, as he dished out 174 assists (8.3 per set) in the six league matches. He also aided the defensive effort with 52 digs, second most on the team.

Making the All-CCAA First Team are and senior outside hitter David Chua, junior outside hitter Eric Irving Jr. and junior libero Taray Irving.

Chua paced the Riptide with 3.8 kills per set, hitting 64 over 17 sets played. Irving Jr. had a team-high 68 kills in 19 sets, adding 39 digs. Taray Irving led River Islands with 86 digs

Junior opposite Nikhil Raj (46 kills, five aces, 35 digs) was named to the second team, while junior middle Darius Radoc Factoran received honorable mention.

River Islands held off Ripon in five sets to win its Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoff opener and reached the semifinal round after downing Adams Academy in four.

Baseball

River Islands finished one game shy of sharing the CCAA title with Turlock Christian and knocked off Southern League champion Mariposa on the road in the first round of the SJS Division VI playoffs.

Cassious Orndoff, also known as “Cash,” was a top two-way contributor for the Riptide. He won all three of his league appearances with a 0.44 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 17 innings. His best effort was a two-hitter in a 3-1 win over Holt Academy in which he struck out 13. At the plate, he led River Islands with a .483 batting average.

Senior shortstop George Dayeh is a first-team selection with a team-high 12 RBIs to go with 11 runs and a .458 average. Junior outfielder Daryl Carpenter joins him on the first team after hitting .444 with two doubles, two triples and 12 runs.

Sophomore Ahi Bysani (.400, 11 RBIs) is on the All-CCAA Second Team. Junior outfielder Matthew Echivarre and senior pitcher/infielder Logan Orndoff made honorable mention.

Softball

Octavia Orndoff finished as one of the top hitters in the SJS with a whopping .741 batting average, 1.362 slugging percentage and 43 RBIs.

In league, she hit .833 with four homers, four doubles, four triples, 23 RBIs and nine steals. She also pitched 33 1/3 innings, striking out 46.

Making the All-CCAA Second Team are Jaycee LaBarber, Ashley Rodriguez and Kalina Rodrigues.
