The Manteca Amateur Radio Club (K6MAN) will join thousands of amateur radio operators across North America in participating in the ARRL Field Day, the largest annual amateur radio event in the United States.

The event will take place Saturday-Sunday, June 27-28, at Woodward Reservoir County Park. The public is invited to attend.

ARRL Field Day is an annual exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League that demonstrates the science, skill, and public service capabilities of Amateur Radio, also known as “ham radio”.

During the event, operators set up temporary radio stations in parks, schools, emergency operations centers, and other locations to practice establishing communications under simulated emergency conditions

Amateur Radio has long served as an important communications resource during disasters and emergencies when normal systems such as cellular networks, internet service, or electrical power may be unavailable.

Licensed amateur radio operators provide emergency and public service communications support for organizations including the Red Cross, local governments, hospitals, and community events.

Field Day also highlights the many educational and technical aspects of Amateur Radio. Operators use voice, Morse code, and digital communications to contact other stations throughout the United States and around the world using portable antennas and emergency power systems.

Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to observe live radio demonstrations, learn how Amateur Radio works, and speak with experienced operators about getting involved in the hobby.

Individuals interested in becoming licensed amateur radio operators are especially encouraged to attend.

As part of the event, the Manteca Amateur Radio Club will offer an Amateur Radio licensing examination session on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. Volunteer examiners will administer FCC Amateur Radio license tests for new operators (Technician) as well as those wishing to upgrade (General, Extra) their current licenses.

Those planning to take an examination should bring a legal photo ID, any existing amateur radio license information (if applicable), and an FCC Registration Number (FRN). To obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN), an applicant must create an account in the FCC’s Commission Registration System (CORES).

There is a $15 testing fee (cash only).

Amateur Radio combines public service, emergency preparedness, electronics, technology, and international friendship into a rewarding lifelong hobby enjoyed by people of all ages. There are no age limits for licensing.
