February 16, 1933
Deputy sheriffs Crawford Hitchcock and J. P. Cassidy and Constable J. A. Rawleigh, with the assistance of federal prohibition officers, conducted a raid on a place four miles south of Manteca on Hogan Road last Thursday and confiscated one of the largest liquor plants found in many months. The operator was not found, apparently making his escape through a warning from a signal system which ran from the home to the road, a distance of a quarter of a mile.

Teachers in the grammar schools comprising the Manteca High School District, together with members of the high school faculty, gathered in the Lindbergh School auditorium Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock to receive instructions in the registering of consumers next week for War Ration Book Two. The speaker was Chuck Hallam, who said the registration period starts Monday, February 22, and continues all week.

Jobs at the new Deuel Vocational Institution near Tracy will go largely to residents of San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties, the State Personnel Board said today. First major civil service examination will be March 28. It is for the class of correctional officer.

The Manteca Bulletin last week was the recipient of one of two Editorial Citations awarded by the California Newspaper Publishers Association at its annual convention. Mr. and Mrs. George Murphy Jr. attended the convention and received the certificate.

House of Representatives Majority Whip John McFall was welcomed home Tuesday evening by throngs of Mantecans for the first time since his selection to the high Washington post. The East Union High School band, led by director Joe Barron, appeared to escort him to Manteca’s large MRPS Hall for a surprise champagne reception.

Attorney Donald Thompson, representing Leonard Taylor, said he will go to court early next week to ask for permission to query witnesses during Taylor’s appeal hearing about two police-related vehicle accidents. He expects to file with San Joaquin County Superior Court for an administrative writ of mandate.

Darell Phillips, publisher of the Manteca Bulletin and vice-president in charge of California operations for the Morris Newspaper Corporation, was installed as president of the California Newspaper Publishers Association at ceremonies held yesterday at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. Phillips’s late father-in-law, George Murphy Jr., was president of the CNPA in 1968.

Manteca gas prices at the pump reached historic highs this week, eclipsing the previous mark of $1.87 per gallon of unleaded set back in October, 2000. The highest gas price in town is $1.99 per gallon at the Chevron station and since all gas prices have that nine-tenths of a cent on the end for some reason, they are just a tenth of a penny from breaking the $2 barrier for a gallon of self-serve unleaded gas.

Expect to see a flurry of construction activity within 30 days to mark the start of a $175 million investment that may ultimately yield upwards of 600 permanent jobs in Manteca. The 190-acre CenterPoint Intermodal Facility — Manteca’s biggest business park yet — is getting ready to break ground west of Airport Way between Roth Road and Lathrop Road in the northwest portion of the city.
