Both Dave Breitenbucher and Mike Morowit have indicated they plan to seek re-election in November to third terms on the Manteca City Council.
And the reason they give are almost identical.
Both made it clear they want to make sure three long-promised endeavors won’t be derailed and will be completed. They are the new police department, the city’s sixth fire station, and the homeless navigation center.
“I want to make sure they get done,” Morowit said.
That isn’t just rhetoric.
In the past 23 years since it was first deemed a less than desirable situation for officer safety and operations, two previous City Council advanced plans for a new police station and then pulled the plug before going out to bid.
The sixth fire station was identified as a pressing need almost a decade ago, but previous city management sidestepped council direction to proceed.
A permanent location for the homeless navigation center has been pursued since 2018.
Passage of the Measure Q three-quarter cent 20-year sales tax that both championed is making all three financially feasible.
Previous councils declined the political risk of offering up the option of voters to decide on a sales tax.
A sales tax was long seen as the only viable solution to bridge funding shortfalls needed for facilities and to make sure municipal services kept pace with growth.
The only candidates so far to file paperwork required to collect campaign funds to run for office are incumbent Mayor Gary Singh and Jacob Naven, who is challenging the mayor.
Actual candidacy filing doesn’t start until June.
Breitenbucher represents District 3 that encompasses downtown as well as Manteca west of Highway 99, north of the 120 Bypass, south of Louise Avenue, and to areas on west either as far as Union Road or just short of that arterial.
Breitenbucher has served on the council since being elected in 2018.
Morowit is the District 4 councilman.
The area covers everything north of Louise Avenue with the exception of the Diamond Oaks neighborhood east of Highway 99.
Morowit served in the council from 2014 to 2018. He was elected to his current term in 2022.
