Ripon cracking down on illegal fireworks use

The Ripon Police Department will be looking to crack down on users of illegal bottle rockets, M-80s, aerial shells, firecrackers, cherry bombs, as well as illegally modified Safe and Sane fireworks.

“Extra officers will be working to address the discharging of illegal fireworks along with safety concerns that arise from it,” posted local police on social media.

This all part of the local host ordinance — similar to ones in place in Manteca and Lathrop — aimed at curtailing the use of illegal fireworks as the Fourth of July approaches.

Fines can end up costing as much as $1,000 depending upon the jurisdiction.

The use of safe and sane fireworks is OK from noon Friday (June 28) through midnight of Thursday, Independence Day. Under state law jurisdiction that allow the sale of Safe and Sane fireworks during that time period have to allow their legal discharge on days that they are sold.

In 2016, an ordinance was passed by the Ripon City Council that allows for police to cite owners, occupants and other persons at or on the property where fireworks are being discharged illegally.

Folks can do their part by reporting illegal fireworks in their area by calling our non-emergency line at 209.599.2102.

They can also use a smart device application or call 911 but only in an emergency or dangerous situation.

Police added: “We do not recommend reporting in-progress incidents via social media as these platforms are not always monitored.”
