Team wins aerodynamics competition

Park View Elementary students took home a first place in Aerodynamics competition along with other awards from the recent 27th Annual San Joaquin County Science Olympiad completion in Stockton.

Nearly 40 students from the third through the sixth grades participated among 50 teams from throughout the county in the daylong event held at the Ronald McNair High School in Stockton.   There were a total of 24 different science challenges at the competition that tested the Park View’s Purple and Black teams.

In addition to the aerodynamics award, Ripon students scored third in “Bottle Music and Pasta Mobile,” fourth in “Reflection Relay,” sixth in “Get Your Bearings” and ninth in “A is for Astronomy, Bottle Music and Pasta Bridge.”

Jen Adolfson is credited for organizing the school’s participation in the competition. Parents and teachers coached students in the various events.

Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions  that consist of a series of individual and team events for which students preparing during the school year, according to Park View Principal Mona Ogden.

The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games.  These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, early science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology, she added.

There is a balance between events requiring knowledge of scientific facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications, the principal explained.
