Samantha Lund, a senior at Ripon High School, was one of the winners in the 83rd annual Robert T. McKee Student Art Exhibition Awards 2014 presented by The Haggin Museum in Stockton.

The 2014 exhibition, on display through April 6, contains 1,127 entries from 59 schools in San Joaquin County. The exhibition is the longest-running student art competition in the United States. It was envisioned 83 years ago by Haggin Museum’s founding patron, Robert T. McKee, whose goal was to encourage students by providing a public venue for their artworks.

In addition to the traditional entries created in crayon, colored pencil and paint, this marks the second year with the addition of digital entries. Eight high school students submitted short digital films, and special prizes were awarded.

Lund was one of three who won honorable mention awards in the 12th-grade category.

Lathrop Elementary in Manteca Unified and Delta Charter School in New Jerusalem Elementary District also participated in this year’s competition.

The judge of this year’s submitted artworks was Monika Meler, an assistant professor in the department of visual arts at the University of the Pacific. Originally from Poland, Meler earned her B.F.A. from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, an M.A. at Purdue University, and M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Her teaching philosophy stresses engagement with the art world outside the classroom.

The Haggin Museum is located at 1201 N. Pershing Ave. in Stockton, and is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 1:30 to 5 p.m., and on first and third Thursday from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (age 65+), $5 for students and youth (ages 10-17).
