RIPON - A 14-month-old Ripon toddler died in a Linden swimming pool mishap over the Easter weekend prompting the Ripon Police Department’s Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) unit to seek contributions to help the family with funeral expenses.

Justin and Mallory Zakian had been visiting family members in Linden on Saturday when little Malachi reportedly slipped unnoticed through a back door and into the pool where he was discovered at about 1 p.m.

As fire units responded to the scene, CPR attempts were ongoing to save the child. The REACH emergency helicopter responded from Stockton Manteca Airport and was flying to U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with the child on board when they reportedly changed course to land at the nearby St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton. CPR efforts were continued at the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

A visitation has been set for 3 until 7 p.m. at Deegan Memorial Chapel in Ripon with a Celebration of his 478-day life scheduled to be held at Calvary Reformed Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The memorial fund has been set up at the Bank of Stockton with account number 3310013028, according to Linda Johnston of the Ripon Police Department.
