SAN MARINO  (AP) — An off-duty police officer accidentally shot himself while driving during an encounter with another driver who turned out to be an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, authorities said Monday. The officer was listed in stable condition.

Police said “neither party knew each other or was aware they were members of a law enforcement agency.”

The San Marino Police Department initially said the driver of a Subaru had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a road rage incident on Sunday but amended that Monday to say road rage was not involved.

An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy driving a Mercedes said he pulled along the Subaru to get the driver to stop speeding, San Marino police said.

The Subaru driver, an off-duty Alhambra police officer, said he slowed and moved to the right to allow the Mercedes to pass. The Alhambra officer later told investigators that he believed the other driver was speeding and driving in an aggressive manner.

“Fearing for his safety, the Alhambra officer drew his firearm while inside his vehicle,” San Marino police said.

He accidentally shot himself once and was hospitalized, authorities said.

Neither driver’s identity has been released. The shooting remains under investigation.
