SACRAMENTO (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown accepted just three gifts last year, in keeping with his minimalist style, according to disclosure forms filed with the state.
Democratic Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, apparently wanted the governor to drink in a manner befitting his position. He gave Brown a $125 beer stein, the Democratic governor reported Thursday.
Brown also reported accepting a $105 dinner from the California Building Association in his first year back on the job, and $75 in flowers on Valentine's Day from the president of the nonprofit San Francisco-based Delancey Street Foundation.
Brown and other elected officials are required to report their financial interests and gifts to the state Fair Political Practices Commission annually, in part to disclose any potential conflicts of interest.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom reported nine gifts, including a teddy bear valued at $100. Newsom's second child was born last summer.
The Democrat also reported a $63 paperweight from the William J. Clinton Foundation, a $150 pillow from the gay rights nonprofit Equality Utah, and a $69 yoga towel.
Brown and his wife, Ann Gust Brown, reported six financial interests valued between $100,000 and $1 million each.
As in last year's filing, the Browns' investments include stock in Jack in the Box Inc., Gap Inc., and Health Fusion Inc., a medical office software business.
Gust Brown, a former Jack in the Box board member, reported more than $100,000 in income from the corporation.
Newsom reported income from his wine business and the family trust of his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The Newsoms also reported investments in Veolia Environment, which provides sewer treatment to many California municipalities.
