DOWNEY  (AP) — A local group is trying to save the world’s first Taco Bell building in Southern California from a potential date with a wrecking ball.

The Downey Conservancy is concerned about the vacant building sitting on a large lot on Firestone Boulevard.

The city says there are no permit requests to tear down the building or develop the site.

The fast food chain started in Downey in 1962 but there’s been no Taco Bell there for many years.

Taco Bell responded to reports by tweeting with the hashtag #SaveTacoBell. A company statement said it’s looking into the situation.
