PG&E POISED TO REPORT ON DIABLO CANYON NUKE PLANT SAFETY: LOS ANGELES (AP) — The utility that owns California’s last operating nuclear power plant will submit research to federal regulators this week analyzing the threat of earthquakes at the Diablo Canyon facility.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. says the work re-evaluates the impact that earthquakes and large waves could have on the plant near San Luis Obispo. Its Monday statement says the research confirms the plant is safe — but the company didn’t provide report details.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission called on nuclear plants to re-examine such risks after Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi disaster. PG&E’s report will be submitted Thursday.

The Associated Press disclosed in August that a federal expert wanted the NRC to shut down Diablo Canyon until it determines whether the reactors can withstand shaking from nearby faults. NRC rejected that recommendation.

Oceanside and Carlsbad firefighters helped the owners free the dog by using the Jaws of Life to force the containers apart.

The dog, named Spike, then walked out on his own.

EPA BEGINS TESTING AIR IN HOMES NEAR FORMER DUMPING SITES: LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is testing the air inside dozens of Los Angeles County homes near two of the nation’s worst chemical dumping sites.

The tests started last month were prompted by worries that the pollutants could be evaporating through the soil and into homes, putting residents at risk.

Residents and community activists pleaded with the EPA for years to test their homes for dangerous soil vapors.

Their demands came following numerous discoveries of contaminated soil and groundwater in the unincorporated community near Torrance. The area was declared an EPA Superfund site in 1996 following decades of chemical dumping at the former Montrose Chemical DDT plant and other facilities.

The EPA is testing for trichloroethylene, benzene and chlorobenzen
