UNMANNED SUB HAS PROBLEMS DURING LAKE TAHOE TEST: SOUTH LAKE TAHOE . (AP) — An unmanned submarine designed to explore earthquake faults has run into motor problems during a test at Lake Tahoe.

The sub was supposed to dive more than 1,000 feet under the Sierra Nevada lake earlier this month but problems cropped up during shallower test dives.

Gordon Seitz with the California Geological Survey says engineers were still able to test the sub's remote controls, cameras, measuring laser and other equipment.

They're hoping for another test run next spring.

The 28-foot-long sub is designed to explore under the Antarctic ice. The Lake Tahoe tests will explore a fault that experts say could produce a quake with a magnitude of 7.1 to 7.4.

GOODWILL SHUTS DOWN BEDBUG-INFESTED WAREHOUSES: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Goodwill Industries has shut down two Bay Area warehouses and thrown out most of the goods. The reason? Bedbugs.

Local Goodwill spokesman Tim Murray said that workers spotted bedbug evidence on Friday at warehouses in San Francisco and Burlingame.

The warehouses were shut down Saturday and the goods thrown out over the weekend. Exterminators and bedbug-sniffing dogs are working to find and clean out the pests.

Murray says most of Goodwill's money comes from the sale of donated goods so the infestations will have a heavy financial impact. He says people should wait a week or two to resume donations — and of course, they shouldn't donate any household goods they suspect might have pests.

HOCKEY MOM GETS 16 MONTHS FOR MOLESTING BOYS: SANTA ANA . (AP) — An Orange County hockey mom who sexually assaulted her son's teenage friends has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

City News Service says 45-year-old Kathia Davis was sentenced Tuesday. The divorced mother of three was arrested in September.

Her attorney says Davis got credit for 474 days served behind bars and she'll be released from Orange County jail within the week. She'll have to register as a sex offender.

Davis was convicted last year of sexually assaulting her son's 16-year-old teammate in her Laguna Niguel home. She pleaded guilty last month to assaulting a 13-year-old friend.

Prosecutors say she plied the boys with alcohol before assaulting them.

CAL STATE EXPANDS AVAILABILITY OF ONLINE CLASSES: LONG BEACH (AP) — California State University students will be able to earn credit this fall by completing online courses offered through any of the system's 23 campuses.

CSU officials announced Wednesday that full-time students are being allowed for the first time to include in their schedules online classes that are not offered by the school where they are enrolled.

Gov. Jerry Brown has encouraged California's universities and colleges to invest in online course delivery as a way to save money while meeting student demand for the classes they need to graduate.

NO HARASSMENT TRAINING PROVIDED FOR MAYOR : SAN DIEGO (AP) — The attorney for San Diego's embattled mayor says the city failed to provide Bob Filner state-required sexual harassment training and therefore should pay to defend him against a lawsuit by his former communications director, who alleges he asked her to work without wearing panties.

Filner's lawyer Harvey Berger made the argument in a letter to City Attorney Jan Goldsmith one day before the City Council voted unanimously to deny Filner funds for his legal defense. Local media published parts of the letter Wednesday.

Berger said the training was scheduled but the city trainer canceled and did not reschedule.
