Whale-watchers on lookout for entangled humpback

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California whale watchers are on the lookout for a humpback entangled in netting and what looks to be a buoy.

Dave Anderson, who owns a whale- and dolphin-watching company, said Saturday that one of his boats carrying tourists spotted the distressed whale late Friday off Dana Point in Orange County.

Anderson, who also heads the Dolphin Safari Whale Rescue, says it was too late to dispatch rescuers because of the setting sun, but that he’s notified other whale-watchers that the humpback was headed south and could be in the San Diego area Saturday.

Anderson says he believes the whale is the same entangled humpback spotted off Redondo Beach in Los Angeles in late October.

Fishing gear is believed to kill thousands of whales, dolphins and porpoises annually.
